For the modern young Indian woman, the dupatta is no longer a must-have for the wardrobe. ac tuli recounts how this rectangular length of transparently thin muslin or silk or crepe fabric inspired poets, novelists and even current film lyricists to pen innumerable evocative ditties on it

THE origin of the dupatta is steeped in antiquity. Figurines and statues excavated at various sites of the Indus Valley Civilisation have revealed that women of that time did use some cloth to cover the bosom, which later came to be known by different names — one of these being the dupatta. Gradually, the dupatta’s popularity spread to other parts of the Indian subcontinent.
Normally, a dupatta goes with the traditional salwar-kameez ensemble worn by Indian women. But to the growing number of top-and-jeans clad young Indian women of today, the dupatta — also known as the chunni, chunnri, chunariya, odni, aanchal, etc — now appears to be a somewhat outdated item of female attire. Of course, the dupatta does not go with the top-and-jeans ensemble fancied by young girls today. Hence, its importance as part of a modern Indian woman’s wardrobe is now on the wane.

However, the romance associated with this rectangular length of transparently thin muslin or silk or crepe or some other fabric has inspired poets, novelists and, in modern times, film lyricists to pen innumerable evocative ditties on it. The perennial popularity of film songs depicting how a dupatta adds to the charm of a young woman’s looks has never allowed them to sound dated, even though some of these songs were recorded more than 70 years back

 ho jee, ho jee… from Raj Kapoor’s classic film, Barsaat (1949). It was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and set to music by Shankar-Jaikishen. Perhaps the inspiration for writing the “lal dupatta” song for Barsaat came to the lyricist Ramesh Shastri from the 1948 Hindi film entitled Lal Dupatta, which starred Madhubala and Sapru and was directed by KB Lal.

 — that was beautifully picturised on Meena Kumari dancing in the traditional style of courtesans. It was written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and set to music by Ghulam Mohammad. But it is perhaps not very well known that this song is not an original creation.
 In 1941 came a film entitled Himmat. The song Inhi logon ne le leena dupatta mera…first appeared in it. It was sung by Shamshad Begum and set to music by Pandit Govindram. The lyrics were provided by Aziz Kashmiri. The tune and the lyrics of the two songs have many similarities.

It is popularly believed that a dupatta or a chunnri safeguards a woman’s modesty. If she casts it off even inadvertently, she exposes herself to the covetous glances of men around her. And if some roadside Romeo dares to pull off the dupatta of a young girl, it amounts to the crime of molestation, punishable with a jail sentence.

So, when a lover playfully pulls at his sweetheart’s dupatta, she gently chides him by singing, Chod do aanchal zamana kya kahe ga…, but the lover replies, Han han in adaaon ka zamana bhi hai deewana, deewana kya kahe ga…This song was picturised on Dev Anand and Nutan  in Paying Guest (1957). Sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar, it was set to music by SD Burman.

But a dupatta or chunnri also symbolises a person’s overall character. Spots on a dupatta represent the sins he/she has committed during their lifetime.  The philosophic song, Laga chunnri mein daag chhupaoon kaise, ghar jaoon kaise…from the 1964 film Dil Hi To Hai is a classic in the melodious voice of Manna Dey. Written by Sahir Ludhianvi and set to music by Roshan, it is one of those songs that never grow old.

How important the dupatta is as part of a woman’s attire is borne out by the fact that there have been a number of Hindi films in the past in whose titles the word dupatta or chunnri or chunnariya has been used singly or in combination with other words. 

Thus, we have had films like Lal Dupatta (1948), Chunnaria (1948), Dupatta (1952), Lal Dupatta Mammal Ka (1989), Laga Chunri Mein Daag (2007), and a few others.
