Description

    Storyline

    Radha (Sardar Akhtar) is an indomitable woman, toiling away to feed her three sons and to pay off Sukhilala (Kanhaiyalal), the village's rapacious moneylender. When she learns that she is pregnant again, her husband, Shamu (Arun Kumar Ahuja), runs far away, leaving her to fend for herself against poverty and the lecherous advances of Sukhilala. Later, the two eldest children die, leaving her with only two sons: the straight-laced Ramu (Surendra) and the wild Birju (Yakub). Ramu becomes a bandit which eventually forces Radha to take drastic actions. Written by Soumitra

PLOT :

The original version of Mehboobs classic Mother India (1957). The heroine Radha (Akhtar) works her fingers to the bone to pay off the villanious moneylender Sukhilala. She and husband Shamu (Arun) have three sons, and when she gets pregnant yet again Shamu removes himself from the scene and leaves her to battle against starvation and the advances of the villain. The two eldest son die, leaving Radha with the diligent Ramu (Surendra) and her favourite, temperamental Birju (Yakub) who goes astray and becomes a bandit chieftain, which causes the family to be ostracised by the village. Birju murders Sukhilala and attempts to abduct his childhood sweatheart, Tulsi (Brij Rani). Radha then kills her son. The film lacks the psychoannalytic dimension and the overtones of socialist realism present in its famous remake, but Akhtars extraordinary performance endows it with an eathiness rooted in North Indian agrarian feudalism that seems to be missing from Mother Indias attempt at nationalist allegory.
