Directed by the renowned lyricist Gulzar, Aandhi stirred up quite the controversy after the film was released in 1975. Shortly after the release of Aandhi, India found itself in the midst of a national state of emergency instituted by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in response to the deep-seated political unrest and instability that had emerged across the nation. The 21-month Emergency of 1975-1977 is often viewed as one of the darkest eras in the political history of post-independence India: corruption, censorship, and the suspension of civil liberties threatened to compromise the basic principles upon which the nation’s democracy had been built. In this context, it’s not surprising that Aandhi was banned by the government during the Emergency on the grounds that the film’s protagonist bore an inappropriate resemblance to Mrs. Gandhi. As a result, certain scenes depicting the protagonist drinking and smoking were re-shot and an extra scene in which the protagonist tells her father that she idolizes Indira Gandhi (“ye hii to mere ideal hai.n“) was included to separate the film from real life. Although the parallels in appearance, mannerisms, and even the film’s title (Aandhi, meaning storm, rhymes with Gandhi) are undeniable, Gulzar explains in an old Filmfare interview that he never intended to base this film on the life of Indira Gandhi:
“Contrary to popular opinion, my story wasn’t based on Indira Gandhi’s life. It had nothing to do with Indira-ji. She was just the role model for the lady politician. Storyline
J.K. is a hotel Manager in a scenic location in India. One day he
gallantly comes to the rescue of a drunk daughter, Aarti, of a
politician, and chooses to be discrete about it. When she recovers, she
and he fall in love; get married in a small marriage ceremony, have a
daughter, and thereafter differences arise to such an extent that they
decide to separate. Years pass J.K. and Aarti meet again when she is an
established politician, both are still attracted to each other, but she
does not want her name to be tarnished and stigmatized as a "separated"
woman. Songs including "Is mod se jaatey hai"; "Tere bina zindagi Se
shikva toh nahin;" and "Tum aa gaye ho" noor aa gaya hai" sung by
Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. Written by

Good Classic
Aandhi is a story about
Policiticans-one in particular…Miss Aaarti Devi (Suchitra Sen), a very
strong and appointed lady. It has been her dream to lead her country one
day, and her father's strong motivation pushed her in the right
direction. Everything is going well up until her opponents start feeling
threatened. People love her and believe her words, and they have to
destroy her public image!! She hits the front-page story. Pictures have
exploited he ruin the arms of another man.-None other than with her very
own HotelManager (Sanjeev Kumar). A scheme well accomplished-as people
all over began talking. She can no longer be trusted!! Who is this man?
And what relation do these two hold? Watch this movie as all truth
unfolds…and overall, to find out if this determined Lady wins back the
trust and vote of her people.

I paired with Uttam Kumar in so many films, and yet, I told my producers to keep my name ahead of the actor in the advertisements.
I had a good friendship with Uttam Kumar, a deep one. Among actors, I respect Dilip Kumar the most. Bimal Roy took me to Bombay in the middle of the 1950s. There I acted against Dilip Kumar in Devdas. A great actor!
