Synopsis
Karan (Sanjay Kapoor) and Kajal (Juhi Chawla) are in love and ready to settle down and lead a happy life. But tragedy strikes as Karan's mother has a heart attack and before she dies, Karan discovers that she wasn't his real mother. He is told that his actual mother is an heiress, Gayatri Singh (Aruna Irani) who lives in Sundernagar. Karan sets out for Sundernagar to confront her and on reaching there, comes to know the tragic story of his mother's life. Her stepbrother, Ugranarayan Singh (Amrish Puri) had killed her husband and had her thrown in a mental asylum so that he can inherit all the wealth. Karan must now punish the people responsible for his mother's morbid state. Will Ugranarayan Singh be brought to justice? Can Karan and Kajal's love survive the fury of vengeance?Cast

Divya Bharti's Death
Divya Bharti was sechdule to play the role of Kaajal but due to her sudden death in April 1993 she was replaced by Juhi Chawala. Divya Bharti has done 30% shooting. Some images of Bharti which has been taken during the shoot were available on Web. Dimple Kapadia has also signed the film to play the role of mother but she later refused due to Divya's Death. Storyline
Karan (Sanjay Kapoor) is a stable young man who's about to marry his
true love, Kajal (Juhi Chawal). But on their engagement day, revelations
about his true past and parentage suddenly come out, forcing Karan to
set out on a quest to uncover the truth--and to take revenge.

Just as good as expected!
I just watched Kartavya
yesterday and I must say, it was pretty good! Although the beginning
was a bit slow, it was still fun to see Juhi and Sanjay together!
Nothing really serious in the first half, just loaded with lots of fun
and dance! Simply sit back and enjoy! Later on, things start picking up
when Karan's(Sanjay Kapoor) mother has a heart attack after being
insulted by the mayor. It is before she dies that Sanjay discovers to
his horror that she wasn't his real mother. He is told that his actual
mother, Gayatri(Aruna Irani) lives in Sundernagar. So he sets out to
find her and is curious why she hadn't taken care of him. When reaching
Sundernagar he comes to know the sad story of his mother's life. Her
stepbrother had killed her husband and had her thrown in an insane
asylum (although she wasn't the least bit crazy), just in the greed for
wealth. Karan is angry at these wrongdoers and feels it is his duty to
finish them off. Will Gayatri return to her normal state of mind? Will
Karan be able to take revenge on his enemies? Watch KARTAVYA to find
out! Now, on to the music and acting... excellent performances were
given by both Juhi and Sanjay! Juhi once again manages to pull off
another comical performance while the anger in Sanjay's eyes are truly
visible. The songs were nice, just plain fun and sometimes simply
random! All in all, the film deserves an 8/10 :)
