Storyline

Jitendra Gupta lives a poor lifestyle in Calcutta, India, along with his elder and widowed sister, and a niece named Sushma. He works in the editorial department of a leading newspaper. He unauthorizedly exposes unscrupulous persons that are related to the newspaper's board of directors, leading to him being reprimanded by the Managing Director, Amita Sinha, and being forced to resign. Amita does have a change of heart, when she finds out that he had printed the truth, not only reinstates him but promotes him as the Chief Editor, and falls in love with him. Amita lives a wealthy lifestyle with her sister, Sunita, and is all set to tell her the good news that she finds out that Sunita has fallen in love with him also. Amita decides to give up on Jitendra in her sisters' interest. Shortly thereafter she receives a marriage proposal from wealthy Vikram Varma, the brother of a Director of the newspaper, for Sunita's hand. They say one sure way to make it big in Hindi film industry is to win the Miss India crown. The maxim was perhaps started because of Nutan, who won the beauty contest in 1952. Apart from a lissome figure she was gifted with one of the most camera-friendly faces in the industry. One could film her from any angle and it came out perfect. The youngster had already been launched by her mother, actress Shobhana Samarth, two years before the pageant. Nutan deviated from melodrama and brought realistic touches to her portrayals. She expressed more with her eyes than others did with their Shakespearean dialogue. If Dilip Kumar was the gold standard for male actors, then Nutan provided the same yardstick for the
fairer sex.

Nutan was low profile about a lot of things, one of which was that she was a trained singer. Here, she sings playback for Yaadgar, under the aegis of Kalyanji (of Kalyanji-Anandji) Mahendra Kapoor and Mahmood Junior make for a cheering squad.

V FOR VERSATILITY
She was just 14 when she faced the camera for her debut film Hamari Beti (1950). People did notice her in films like Hum Log (1951) and Nagina (1951) but it was Amiya Chakrabarty’s Seema (1955) where she knocked out the audience with her performance. The versatile actress didn’t just limit herself to drama but excelled in comedy and romance as well. She wowed the public in rom coms like Paying Guest (1957), Navketan’s Tere Ghar Ke Saamne (1963), and even slapstick Dilli Ka Thug (1958) with Kishore Kumar. She made her mark in author backed women oriented roles. It was Bimal Roy who brought out the best in her in films like Sujata (1959) and Bandini (1962), where her portrayal of a woman crazed by love to commit murder was said to be her most intense role ever. Her other memorable performances include the reincarnation drama Milan (1967) and Saraswatichandra (1968).

MARRIAGE MANTRA
She married Naval Lieutenant Commander Rajneesh Behl in 1959. Her personality changed in his company. He was fond of hunting and turned her into a shikari as well. Her son Mohnish Behl was born in 1961. Maternity hardly touched her figure or her acting skills as she went on from one creative success after another. All apparently wasn’t well on the marriage front and she allegedly became close to Sanjiv Kumar, who was an intense actor himself. She had to publically slap him on the sets of Gauri to save her marriage.

(L) Even in her fifties, Nutan was still as chiseled and stunning as ever. Her Gautam Rajadhyaksha portrait is enough evidence. She would have given botox a run for its money.
(R) With Amitab Bachchan, her Saudagar co-star and Mahmood. Incidentally Nutan was gracious enough to star with a nobody called Amitabh Bachchan while she was at the helm of her career.
