Plot :

They all called her Malkin. Besides being the landlady she ruled over the hearts of her Tenants. Her building affectionately known as Ghareeb Nivas (the abode of the poor) was situated in a thickly populated are of Bombay. An old three storeyed Chawl, this building was the only thing she and her daughter were living upon; whatever little rent she collected was all their income. All her tenants were poor hard working labourers who, early in the morning, prayed to God for strength to earn an honest living, worked hard throughout the day and after returning to their beloved abode thanked the almighty for a well spent day and two square meals. . Living in their midst and as one of them, Malkin loved them all like her own children. It was one big family - a small world of their own the integrity of which they loved more than any thing else. . But Malkins daughter Manju did not agree with her ideas and principles. She, in her turn, was in love with all the luxuries and comforts of life that money could buy. She loved beautiful cars, lovely clothes and jewellery, Radios, and Radiograms and she loved Sharat, who compelled by his love for Manju, had come to stay in the same building. He was an ordinary travelling agent to a shoe firm and earned a respectable living. He had billetted himself in a small room with two others the Milkman and the Bread Seller. His new comrades life, their principles, their religious devotion and their most humanly beautiful feeling for one another changed Sharats complete outlook on life. He sacattered, in all the inhabitants of the building, Love that perveded the depths of his Soul-He became on of them. He still wanted Manju but along with it he wanted to be a help to his poor brethren. . Manju couldnt tolerate it. She loved Sharat but hated his principles. She wanted him, but dreamed of Motor Cars, and the beautiful furniture in his room. He advised her to sell this building off her a huge sum that he promised to her; with that wealth she could start a new life. "This building would be pulled down and would five place to a new modern building. The location is ideal for big business offices. There could be a profit of Lakhs of rupees"-and that is exactly why he had come in this building. . Before going on pilgrimage to Kashi Malkin had transferred the building in Manjus name. Manjus dreams were coming true, and the Tenants were already dreaming of a dreadful life on the footpath they were going to dogs... [Source: Booklet]
