Lagan is a 1941 Indian Bollywood film. It was the fifth highest grossing Indian film of 1941.[1] The film was directed by Nitin Bose for New Theatres Ltd. Calcutta.[2] The film was a bilingual with K. L. Saigal and Kanan Devi acting as the lead in its Bengali language version, Parichaya. The music for both versions was by R. C. Boral.[3] This was the last film Saigal did for New Theatres, Calcutta, before his move to Bombay to make films for different studios there.[4]
The film was a romantic triangle involving a poet, his beloved, and her wealthy husband. A theme, which was later followed by Guru Dutt, for his film, Pyaasa (1956).[4]
Plot[edit]
At the annual college event the main singer goes missing. To help matters, Kusum Kumari (Kanan Devi) plays a record. The lyrics of the song are by a young poet (K. L. Saigal) living in a village. The Principal of the college, impressed by the poet's work brings him to the city. The poet takes to training Kusum to sing for the next event and falls in love with her. One of the patrons (Nawab) is a wealthy businessman. He is enthralled by Kusum and after negotiations with her father, marries her in spite of the poet trying to intercede. The poet disappears, but after some time, the husband listens to Kusum and helps in furthering the poet's career. The gesture is misunderstood by the poet who thinks that the help was given to him because of Kusum's love for him. Finally Kusum has to let him know that for her the poet was a Guru she respected.

Reception[edit]
The film was a big hit at the box office. Kanan Devi won the Best Actress award from the Bengal Film Journalists Association's in 1942 for the Bengali version Parichaya.[5]
Music[edit]
The music director was R. C. Boral, with lyrics Arzu Lucknavi and Pandit Madhur.[6] Boral made use of western influences in the music for this film like the use of a piano in "Kaaheko Raad Machayi".[7] The major reason for the success of the film is cited as that the songs were sung by Kanan Devi (5) and Saigal (6).[8][9]

Plot :
The Principal (played by Nemo) of a Music College for girls, quite pleased with himself for the arrangements made for the annual social, finds his apple-cart upset at the eleventh hour; not knowing what to do, he is at his wits end, when contrary to expectations, Kusum Kumari, (played by Kanan) a sutdent of the college, much against the Principals wishes, plays a gramphone-record, which astonishingly solves the knotty problem. An unknown and unacclaimed poet is the composer of the beautiful song. The ever-alert Principal seizes the oppurtunity and brings this poet (played by Saigal) from his native-village. The poet rents a room in a mansion where incidentally Kusum Kumarai who is indirectly responsible for his job, occupies the top floor. . The poet choses Kusum Kumari to sing at the annual social of Music Collegem and coaches her. . Kusum Kumari justifies the selection and progresses to the full satisfaction of her tutor. . Tutor and pupil send many hours together practising and rehearsing in an effort to put up a fine performance at the social Subconsciously the poet is being drawn closer and closer and closer by the magnetic charm of this beautiful and talented girl. . The annual event comes off very succesfull. Praises and honours are showered upon th girl. The poet goes undercognized. He is pushed into the background. The impulsive and ecentris though talented poet receives a serious shock. He is ignored. He departs. The President of function is a middle-aged highly successful unmarried busines man (played by Nawab). In his attempt to gain fame and wealth, he had found no time for anything but his work. He is on the top of the world now and for the first time in his life, he is attracted by the melodious voice and singing, and than by the beauty of this talented girl. He falls headlong into love with her. He desires to marry her. The Principal of the Music College makes the neccessary arrangements. The father (played by Jagdish) of the girl is very pleased with the with the proposal, for after all one of the richest and most powerful men of the city would be his son-in-law. He accepts. The marriage is arranged. The eccentric and selfish poet hears of the comming event. He rushes back. He Protests vehemently, and in the protests, he burst out with his ardent love for the girl. The girl is painfully surprised. She had loved and respected him as her tutor and guide. The poet is frantic. What does the girl do? What can she do? . The marriage takes place. The girl lives like a queen. The husband adores her. Is the girl happy or is she like a bird in a gilded cage? The husband senses that something is missing to complete her happiness The girl confides in her husband. She misses her tutor. The tutor to whom she owes her present position. Comforts and Joys which are direct outcome of his efforts, and he may be rotting somewhere, without closthes, without recogintion. She tells her husband that she had written tothe piet but her letters had returned unopened. She could not trace him. The husbands promises. He must give the poet all the name and fame he deserves. He moves Heaven and Earth. The is found. He is acclaimed. He is honoured and pushed to the top by the husband. . The girl is happy. The husband is happier. The poet misunderstands. He misinterprets the girls motive. The old flame is rekindled. The misguided poet claims her. The girl dissuades him. Reason does not appeal to him. Love has driven him mad. He must have her. For a moment the husband misunderstands; she misunderstands her husband. The situation is tense. Three lives are hanging in the balance; she loves him who loves her not, and he loves her who loves him not-what a tangle !
