Sajan (Boyfriend) is a 1947 Hindi romantic film directed by Kishore Sahu.[1] The film was produced by Filmistan and had music by C. Ramchandra.[2] The story and screenplay were by Kishore Sahu.[3] The film had Rehana in the female lead, and following the success of this film, as well as Shehnai (1947), she became an "overnight star".[4] The cast included Ashok Kumar, Rehana, Ramesh Gupta, Anant Prabhu and Leela Mishra.[5]
The story revolves around Prakash (Ashok Kumar), a man suffering from amnesia following a train accident. A man pretending to be Prakash surfaces at his house. The film was a big commercial success.[6]
Plot[edit]
Prakash (Ashok Kumar) is returning home after eleven years from UK, and is now on a train for his journey back home. He meets a young man, also called Prakash (Ramesh Gupta), on the train who befriends him. The train meets with an accident and Prakash loses his memory. While Prakash is wandering around trying to regain his memory, the man from the train thinking that Prakash (Kumar) is dead, pretends to be Prakash and reaches his house. There everyone believes him to be Pakash except for his wife, Kamla (Rehana), who then runs away from home. She joins a band of wandering gypsies. Kamla and Prakash meet, both unaware of each other's true identity. Forming a close bond, the two finally realise the truth when Prakash's memory returns. The fake Prakash is revealed as the villain.
Cast[edit]
- Ashok Kumar as Prakash
- Rehana as Kamla, Prakash’s wife
- Ranjit Kumari as Bijli, a gypsy girl
- Ramesh Gupta as the fake Prakash
- Leela Mishra
- S. L. Puri as the gypsy chief
- Anant Prabhu
- Satyanarayan
- Samson
Reception[edit]
Filmindia called it a "highly improbable and unrealistic story", but praised it for its fast pace and "good entertainment". The story was inspired by Random Harvest (1942), however unlike it, Sajan made "no effort" to remain "plausible". Baburao Patel, the editor of Filmindia, remarked on the implausible situation of a mother, servants and others not recognising someone only after a period of eleven years. Critical of Rehana's acting, citing it as "Rehana flops", Patel praised S. L. Puri, in his role of the gypsy leader, as the only actor to show any "authenticity" in the film.[3]
Soundtrack[edit]
Ashok Kumar, who was to sing his songs in the film, was replaced by playback singer Mohammed Rafi. In his book "A Journey Down Melody Lane", Bharatan states that Ashok Kumar was unable to reach the recording studios due to the Hindu-Muslim riots (1947), and hence the composer of the film, C. Ramchandra, "daringly" chose Rafi to sing "Hum Ko Tumhara Hi Aasra", which became "an instant hit".[7] The lyricists were Qamar Jalalabadi, Ram Murti Chaturvedi and Moti.[8]
Song List[edit]

For the 40s numbers I am uploading two songs from the 1947 classic Sajan. To my knowledge they are not yet on YT.
sambhal sambhal ke jaiyo, sambhal sambhal ke jaiyo
sambhal sambhal ke jaiyo, ho banjare ho banjare
dilli dur hai, sambhal sambhal ke jaiyo
sambhal sambhal ke jaiyo
marwad mathe pe chamke, naina chamke kashi
mukh me man mohan ki madhura
jo hai barij ke wasi
rama jo hai barij ke wasi
hotho pe hai avadh ram ki
gal tere gujrat, rang me dhare ho banjare
dilli dur hai, sambhal sambhal ke jaiyo
ho sambhal sambhal ke jaiyo
jhumke me jhansi wali ki, tej chama cham chamke
baju ye bangal boss ki, kurbani se chamke
malav mori base jawahar, moti lal dulare
ho banjare ho banjare, dilli dur hai
sambhal sambhal ke jaiyo, sambhal sambhal ke jaiyo
chunari me lahraye tiranga, man me bharat pyara
jeet liya dili hamne, jai hind hamara nara
kadam ruke na shish jhuke na, himmat bhi na hare

Rehana
Rehana was a top actress of Hindi cinema in the late 1940s and early
1950s. She is regarded as Hindi cinema's first 'jhatka queen', her
dances catering to the front benchers or the 'chavani class' as they was
called then, while being labelled vulgar by the educated gentry! Today
when one looks back, one finds her dances and stagey acting pretty
harmless wondering what the furor was all about. Rehana, however, loved
her sex-pot image and was known to have quipped, "Am I Sexy? Good, I like that!"
Rehana was born Mushtar Jehan in Mumbai. After playing supporting roles in films like the KL Saigal - Suraiya starrer Tadbir (1945), Rehana was cast as one of the leading ladies in the Prabhat drama, Hum Ek Hai (1946) co-starring Dev Anand, Kamala Kotnis and Rehman. The film was the beginning of a fruitful partnership with the debutant director of the film, PL Santoshi, a partnership that would go on till 1952 through films like Shehnai (1947), Khidki (1948), Sargam (1950), Chham Chhama Chham (1952) and Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo (1952). It is said Santoshi was totally besotted by her.
Shehnai and Sajan (1947), both made for Filmistan, were Rehana's breakthrough films that made her a star. The former, pairing her with Nasir Khan, also established director PL Santoshi and music director C Ramchandra whose super-hit song for the film Aana Meri Jaan Meri Jaan Sunday ke Sunday was hummed thoughout the country. Sajan saw her paired with Ashok Kumar and remains one of her most well-known films.
Rehana entered the best phase of her career from 1948 - 1951 as she did a variety of films paired opposite most of the top heroes of the day - Prem Adib (Actress (1948)), Raj Kapoor (Sunehre Din (1949), Sargam (1950)), Dev Anand (Dilruba (1950)), Shyam (Nirdosh (1950), Surajmukhi (1950)), Shekar (Ada (1951)) and Premnath (Sagai (1951)). Two of her biggest hits from these were Sargam (1950) and Sagai (1951). Most of the films preferred to capatilise on her seductive dances rather than make any great acting demands on her.
However, post Sagai, Rehana's career sharply went on the decline as films like Rangeeli (1952), Chham Chhama Chham, Hazar Raatein (1953) and Samrat (1954) all sank at the box-office. And soon Rehana found herself playing second lead in films like Dhola Maru (1956) and Delhi Durbar (1956). With her career on decline in India, Rehana migrated to Pakistan with the hope of continuing her career there.
Rehana's films in Pakistan like Shalimar (1956), opposite Sudhir, Wehshi (1956), Apna Paraya (1959) failed at the box office. The only succesful film she really had in Pakistan as leading lady was Raat ke Rahi (1960). Aulad (1962) was also successful but by then she was no longer leading lady and Nayyar Sultana played the heroine of the film. Rehana married the producer of Raat ke Rahi, Iqbal Shehzad but it was short-lived. After separating from him, she married businessman Sabir Ahmed. She had a cameo dance number in the Zeba - Syed Kamal - Mohammed Ali starrer Dil ne Tujhe Maan Liya (1963) after which she faded away from the film scene.
Rehana resurfaced in 1995 as a member of the jury for the Nigar Awards. After her husband's death, she lives a secluded life today.
