Storyline
Chiranjeev lives a wealthy lifestyle along with his widowed father,
Kashiram, two sisters, one of who is dumb, and a younger brother. While
on a trip, his friend, Mohan, falls ill due to high consumption of
alcohol, and gets treated at a Ashram. This is where Chiranjeev meets
with an employee, Sharada, who lives a poor lifestyle with her widowed
father, Ram Sharan, and both fall in love with each other. Chiranjeev
promises to get his father's permission and return to get married to
her. On the way he has an accident, he does survive, is looked after by
tribal people, and after several days returns to the Ashram only to get
the shocking news that Sharada is now married to a very wealthy and much
older male. Devastated, he returns home and gets another shock when he
finds that the male Sharada has married is no other than his very own
father. He gets depressed and takes to alcohol in a big way. Sharada
talks him out of this, he repents, and on her insistence, gets married

A very well acted and directed enjoyable social drama
I have seen one other
movie directed by L.V. Prasad which also had Meena Kumari in the lead
role. That was Miss Mary also made in 1957. Though Miss Mary was based
on a more lighter mode, Sharada had a very serious social issue in its
story. What happens when an adult son Chiranjeeb finds that his lady
love is married to his father after he returns from a short break from
home. Both Meena Kumari as Sharada, the religious hard working Asram
girl and Raj Kapoor as Chiranjeeb as the son of a wealthy father played
their role extremely well. Director Prasad captured the scenes of their
surprise and agony in a very realistic way when they both put the truth
behind the mishap. After being dejected and feeling hopeless Chiranjeeb
resorted to drinking with Om Prakash providing a very well acted
sidekick. The music was so so with the exception of the wonder girls Sai
and Subhalakhsmi presenting a spectacular dance sequence. This is
another one of Meena Kumari's tragic roles and she played those moments
admirably and this is the second movie I saw after Baiju Bawara where
the movie ended with Meena Kumari dying.

PROFILE:- Meena Kumari (Aug 1st 1932 - Mar 31st 1972)
The droop of her kiss curl, the anguish-laden voice never more than a sob from abject despair, the unblemished beauty made Meena Kumari the ultimate tragedy queen in Indian Cinema. This is an image to which she remained shackled for the rest of her life - the lonely sorrowful woman whose desires remain unfulfilled in a cruel world.
Born 1933 into a poor Parsee theatre family of Ali Bux and dancer Iqbal Begum in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. She entered films to support family in difficult times. She was six when hired for Leatherface (1939) in 1939 by Vijay Bhatt and named Baby Meena. Later she became Meena Kumari when cast for Bhatt's Baiju Bawra (1952). She did mythological films with Homi Wadia and then comedies like Miss Mary (1957). She became personified as the archetypal good Hindu wife through many roles, long suffering and always true to the man. She excelled at tragedy and was often shown in a white sari carrying the film with her emotive acting. She was also thought to be the only actress who could sell a film on the strength of her name alone. Her major films are Daera (1953), Baiju Bawra (1952), and of course her most well known film, Pakeezah (1971). She was married to Kamal Amrohi with whom she started making "Pakeezah". They separated in 1964. She was also an accompalished Urdu writer and had several poems published by Gulzar after her death. She battled alcoholism and loneliness and finally died, alone, in 1972.
Meena Kumari made history in 1962 as she garnered all three Best Actress nominations for the Filmfare Award- for Aarti (1962), Main Chup Rahungi (1962), and of course Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962)- for which she won the award.
Pakeezah was released on February 4th 1972. The film was declared a flop. Three weeks after the release of the film Meena Kumari fell seriously ill, and on March 31, 1972, at 3.25 p.m. she died of cirrhosis of the liver . Death came almost as her birth had come. For when she died in ST Elizabeth's nursing home, it was said, there was no money to pay her hospital bills. Yet after she died, 'Pakeezah' became an instant hit, as people flocked to see it. Death seemed to have followed a pattern which her whole life had set. A reluctant entrant to films, her greatest celluloid fantasy, it seems, only waited for her dejection, and eventual death, before becoming a huge success. A legend when she was alive, and an irreplaceable actress after her death, Meena Kumari's iconic status will remain untouched for a long time to come

MINI PROFILE:- Gope (1914 - 1957)
Beginning his career in the early 1930s, Gope Kamlani went on to become one of Hindi cinemas most popular comedians. Such was his appeal that at the height of his career, he shared credits with the films lead actors.
One of nine children, Gope completed his education in Karachi (now in Pakistan). His interest in acting was nurtured by filmmaker K.S. Daryani, who encouraged Gope to join films. With his help, Gope convinced his father and moved to Bombay to become an actor
His first film was Insaan Ya Shaitan (1933), which starred among others Jaddan Bai, the mother of actress Nargis. Gope soon won critical and popular acclaim for his comic roles and became the leading comedian of his time. Amongst his better-known films are Hindustan Hamara, Patanga, Mirza Sahiban, and Chori Chori.
Gope also tried his hand at playing negative roles. In the 1951 Dilip Kumar-Madhubala*starter Tarana, he teamed up with Jeevan to play the villain, albeit in a comic style. He started Gope Productions in the 1950s, which made such films as Hangama and Biradari. Some of these features were directed by Gope’s brother, Ram Kamlani.
Married to actress Latika, Gope continued to act till his death in 1957.
