Didi didn’t have to sing my kind of songs: Asha Bhosle
She turned 80 on September 8 this year. But her enthusiasm shows no signs of ebbing. Asha Bhosle
continues to do what she does best: sing. Alongside, she is prepping up
for her debut as an actress in Mahesh Kodiyal’s Maaee. And, she is also
now a proud restaurateur, owning a worldwide chain of eateries that
serve up her own signature dishes among others.
She begins by sharing an anecdote: “My daughter recently asked me why I speak to everyone from the watchman to the guy who does our laundry. She advised me to maintain a distance from people. But I disagree. Just because I sing, it doesn’t mean I am not a human being. I like to see myself as a simple person.” In reference to our recent interview with her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, Ashaji says, “It feels good to hear her say she can’t sing what I can. But if she had wanted to sing my kind of songs, she would have. She didn’t want to, and she didn’t have to. She got to sing all the songs for the heroines, so she didn’t have to sing for the other female characters in any film. I got those songs and made the best of them.”
Recalling her struggles, she says, “It was very tough for me. Who would want to go to another singer when there was already a Lata Mangeshkar? To top it, I was her younger sister. Hamesha, humein ek tarazu mein tola gaya. Janam bhar hum usi tarazu mein baithe rahe. I still haven’t escaped those comparisons. I had to be different from Didi. Copying her would have meant the end of my career before it began. I had to get songs comparable to her’s and cultivate a western style of singing. I had to be prepared to do any kind of song that was offered to me.”
Then again, cabaret numbers were considered very lowly in those days but Ashaji was resilient, something she attributes to her honesty. “People can see right through me. I also prefer to move on. Not that I’ve forgotten the pain I went through. I am the soldier who has taken wounds on my chest. At 80, I am happy and peaceful. No regrets. God gave me endurance and because of him, I am still standing tall,” she says.
Not one to be carried away by fame and recognition, today, Ashaji is far more concerned with her home and family. “My son Anand has twins. I divide my time between his home and my own at Peddar Road. When I am at Prabhu Kunj, I unfailingly have my morning tea with Didi at her place. I go to her whenever I feel like,” she says brightly.
She speaks fondly of RD Burman but the RD remixes fail to impressher.“I wanted to be faithful to the original songs in the album Rahul & I. However, I surrendered to my son Anand’s wishes, and he designed it as per today’s tastes. The album was a resounding success. Despite heavy losses to music and musicians at times, people continue to cash in on big names in music. My advice to those doing remixes is please spare a thought for the original song,” she says.
The conversation veers toward her passion for cooking. “Khaana comes first, gaana later. My son proposed starting an eatery. Today, we have ten restaurants in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Kuwait etc. I have personally supervised the menu at these places. Not just my own recipes but also those derived from my colleagues like poet lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri’s Sultanpuri Kebab have been included,” she says.

Asha Mam, You are a goddess rather Alpha Omega of Bollywood. The only unlucky factor is you came at the alter a vee bit late Maam. Your songs, your voice, the effect you put in for ethos and pathos, your humility and above all your voice modulation whether you are singing for Madhubala, Nutan, Helen, Zeenat, Neetu,Sadhana or any any other heroine it would just match up with them. Ghazals, Cabarets, Qawwalis, Pop, folk, classical you just name them Asha Tai is there uncomparable. You are simply great mam, just underrated. The quirk follows you too just like Rafi, Being talented is another thing and to be lucky is another.... Read Less
