Storyline
Madan comes from a poor family background. Unable to find employment, he takes to gambling in a big way. He makes a lot of money, and decides to open a gambling den, where he makes even more money. He meets with sophisticated and cultured Dr. Rajani, and both are attracted to each other. But Rajani's dad does not approve of Madan nor of his background, and would prefer that Rajani marry Inspector Ramesh. Rejected, Madan meets with vivacious and outgoing Meena, and romances her. Then Inspector Ramesh arrests Madan and imprisons him for the murder of Meena, who was killed with a revolver with Madan's fingerprints on it. A winner
It's a fascinating Indian take on Gilda also borrowing bits from Destry Rides Again and Casablanca among others. The print is in a wobbly condition after all these years and even looks at times like it might have been close to combustion, but the poetry and the poetry of the music by S. D. Burman shines through. I don't do gambling, so I'm glad that even with the title of The Gamble there wasn't much gambling – but I'd still bet most people on the planet will never watch this. It was the first film Guru Dutt directed – he even gave himself a bit part smoking away at the start of the picture.
The previous post gives it nearly all away, but Dev Anand plays a basically honest young buck prone to gambling employed by dodgy boss of dingy nightclub to entice in and then fleece rich suckers. He does this to make sure he has enough money to pay for his sisters' recovery from TB, simultaneously he falls in love with a lady doctor (Kalpana Kartik, his real-life future wife) with a rather dodgy and forbidding father. I found the playful performance of Geeta Bali portraying prostitute Nina delightful – she danced well to some superb tunes - made both by the lovely music and the honourable emotions aroused within her by Anand. Years ago I used to smoke 30 a day but never blew cigarette smoke so forcibly into other people's faces as do a lot of the characters a lot of the time in here! The police inspector was no sluggard either, he was almost too noble to be true. Was this skinny Johnny Walker's first film ever? Geeta Dutt did most of the singing, my favourite of course being the philosophical Tadbir Se Bigdi Hui Taqdeer Bana Le – such a perfect jolly fusion of East & West pop. Also nice and jolly was Dekh Ke Akeli Mohe Barkha Sataaye. Wheeee, talk about catchy tunes!

In her early 80s, Kalpana spends her time in spiritualism and voraciously reads old classic literature.
A fun-loving girl from the hills, Mona finished her studies from St. Bede's College, Shimla
where she won a beauty contest and became 'Miss
Shimla'.
"It was during this contest that filmmaker Chetan Anand's eyes spotted me. He persuaded me to join films and also gave me the screen name of Kalpana Kartik," says Kalpana Kartik, who now leads a quiet life in Mumbai.
Kalpana was introduced by Navketan Films' Baazi in 1951 opposite Dev Anand.
The film directed by Guru Dutt brought her to prominence.
"In 1952, Chetan Anand again cast me opposite Dev Anand in Aandhiyan along with another stalwart of the era, Nimmi.
In spite of brilliant direction and music by Ali Akbar Khan, Aandhiyan flopped. So did Navketan's fourth film Humsafar with Dev Anand and Smriti Biswas directed by Anadi Nath Banerjee," she says.
"It was at this juncture that Uma Didi (Chetan Anand's wife) and my to be brother-inlaw Vijay Anand came up with the taut script of Taxi Driver," she adds.
The film featuring Dev Anand and Kalpana along with a newcomer Sheila Ramani was a turning point in her life.
Chetan took it up as a challenge to create a cinematic history.
Shot mainly on the streets of Mumbai with a movie camera tied to the back of a taxi, Taxi Driver was a realistic film with the city of Mumbai forming a major character for the film.
On the sets of the film, love blossomed between superstar Dev Anand and shy Kalpana. Madly in love, the two decided to get married secretly.
"My midnight marriage with Dev Anand took place on the sets of the movie as we were shooting in full swing. It was the most spontaneous event to have occurred in my life," she said. She looks back only to recall the dialogue from the film, "Kyun Jane Diya?" as she remembers all her beloved Anands.
