The film courted controversy owing to its story of a prodigal son of a benevolent mill worker who inherits the mill and proceeds to treat its workers with disdain.
This is the only film written by the acclaimed writer Munshi Premchand in which he also played a cameo. The film courted controversy owing to its story of a prodigal son of a benevolent mill worker who inherits the mill and proceeds to treat its workers with disdain. This brings him into conflict with his own sister who is keen to continue their father’s legacy. The scene of the sister inciting the workers to strike against her wayward brother evoked inflammatory responses across the country especially in Bombay, the hub of textile mills, and the film had to be pulled out of the theatres, in many cases through the use of force. Yet it remains a stark, accurate portrayal of industrial life in those times as well as the predicament of workers.
Ironically, workers at Premchand’s own press in Benares were inspired to strike work against non-payment of wages by this film.

| Story Summary | One
of the first realistic treatments of industrial working-class
conditions and the only engagement with cinema of the best-known 20th-C.
Urdu and Hindi novelist, Munshi Premchand. In his biography, Premchand:
A Life (19821, Amrit Rai noted that Premchand had to accept Bhavnani's
offer for financial reasons after the closure of his journal Jagran. In
Bombay for a year, Premchand wrote: 'What they want are thrilling and
sensational films. Without endangering my reputation I shall try and go
along with the directors as far as I can, for that I shall be obliged to
do. [I]dealisrn demands a high price and one is occasionally obliged to
suppress it.' Premchand later elaborated his position on the film
industry in his essay Cinema Aur Suhityu (publ. in Lekhak, Allahabad,
1935). Shot on location in a Bombay textile mill, the schelnatic plot
opens with the death of a benevolent mill owner whose good daughter
Padma (Bibbo) and drunken playboy son Vinodh (Nayampalli) must now run
the business jointly. Vinodh's ruthlessly exploitative management
prompts Padma and her protege Kailash ([airaj) to lead a strike against
her brother. Vinodh turns violent, goes to prison and the mill closes.
With the workers' support and a providential order, Padma restarts the
business in a humanitarian way and marries Kailash. The president of the
Mill Owners Association was a member of the censor board in Bombay and
tried to get the film banned. The Punjab Board cleared the film
initially, but following near-riots aker it was released in Lahore,
banned it. The Delhi ban was followed by a Central government decree
that the film had an inflammatory influence on workers. The film was a
commercial failure, sinking the Ajanta Studio. ----- Premchand manoranjakata necessary to bring the story of the film was not favorable. He wrote, "I think the plot is a Chartered Accountant idealism and the entertainment value that has not called me." (February 7, 1935) before November 28, 1934, in a letter he wrote to Mr jealous, "the producers Love Story, which has been forming, casakava not want them at all. Premchand's agreement with the company in May 1935 was up. March 25, 1935, the day he took leave from being disappointed. Provided that the amount of the contract (ru8 thousand) instead ru6 them, only 300 met. He went back to Benares cinema 'Beard-liquor shop "expressed regret for having been made. "People prefer films ghantaghantavali Sunday and sensational and belief is an illusion. Love, abandonment, friendship and compassion rich juice is watching movies. "Premchand faith that right exerted after his death, made several films. Premchand stories sataranjake from the player himself, godana, Non, notable films like sautela brother. Compared with a typically hacamacavanari mantoni works from his plays have been produced, but have not yet become a single movie is not in view. |

India’s Top 10 Lost Films – Compiled by P.K. Nair
This is the only film written by the acclaimed writer Munshi
Premchand in which he also played a cameo. The film courted controversy
owing to its story of a prodigal son of a benevolent mill worker who
inherits the mill and proceeds to treat its workers with disdain.
A mythological film with a stellar cast featuring Prithviraj
Kapoor as Ram and Durga Khote as Seeta along with some of the most
high-profile actors of the time, the film broke new ground by becoming
the first Indian film to gain international exposure: it was screened at
the 1934 Venice Film Festival where Debaki Bose won an award, the first
Indian filmmaker to do so on an international platform.
One of the highest grossing films of the 1940s, the music for the
film was composed by Pankaj Mullick. The film saw P.C. Barua coming
together once again with K.L. Saigal along with the actress Jamuna. It
was a film that not only challenged social mores but also explored the
complexities and consequent disillusionment of an unusual platonic
relationship between an unmarried couple living together.
This was the first adaptation of a Shakespearan drama in Indian
cinema. Largely a filmed version of a stage performance of the play, the
film contains a towering performance by Sohrab Modi in the central role
of Hamlet, and is an astute adaptation of the original Shakespeare
play. The film marked the feature debut of Naseem Banu, as Ophelia.

Bhakta Vidur (Alternate Title: Dharma Vijay), 1921, 89 mins
Adopting the perspective of Vidur- the chief advisor to the
Kauravas, who, for ethical reasons, sided with the Pandavas prior to the
great war of Kurukshetra- the film ‘Bhakta Vidur’ sought to hold a
moral lens to the struggle between British colonialists and the Indian
resistance.
One of the earliest examples of broad, deliberate satire made in
the mould of the Hollywood slapstick comedies of the time, ‘Bilet
Pherat’ (1921) lampoons the trend of Indians travelling abroad (in those
days, usually to Britain) for higher education in a…
A milestone film by Baburao Painter, ‘Savkari Pash’ is notable
not just for its courage in going against the grain but also for its
technical finesse and poignant treatment of its subject matter. At a
time when mythological films were de rigueur, Baburao Painter staked
almost everything to make India’s first social realist film.
‘An excellent and truly Indian film’- The Indian Cinematograph Committee, 1927.
‘Balidan’ was a persuasive effort at bringing about social reform with its story of a conflict between a progressive, rational king and an orthodox, ritual-bound priest.
