G.R. Sethi, who directed the hit serial version in 1933, again tries his hand at this story of a young adventurer, Hatam (Kamal Kapoor), who falls in love with a fairy (Vanmala) and then goes on a magical journey to solve several riddles which will lead him to a fantastical plant that can cure blindness.

In the role of the hero Hatam was Kamal Kapoor who spent time on stage with Prithvi Theaters before moving into films . He entered pictures with Dak Bangla (1947), although some sources list Door Chalen (1946) as his debut as it was released first. He generally appeared in character parts, but early in his career played a few leads. He was born Kamal Kishore Kapoor on February 22, 1920 in Lahore, Punjab and is the father of director Kapil Kapoor and brother of actor Ravinder Kapoor. Actor Prithviraj Kapoor was his cousin. Kamal Kapoor died on August 2, 2010.

Playing opposite Kamal Kapoor was Vanmala (rn: Sushila Pawar) who began her career in Marathi cinema. Born May 22, 1915 in Ujjain, Madhya Pradash state She was a teacher at Agarkar High School in Poona before entering films and was involved with the Quit India movement and is reported to have sheltered many freedom fighter in her own home. She won a best actress award for her work in the Marathi film Shyamchi Aai (1953) but she considered her role in the Hindi/Marathi bilingual Vasantsena (1942) to be her best.

Vanmala remained involved in social causes and was running a cultural arts school for children almost up to the time of death on May 30, 2007 at age 92.
