Indian Pumpkinhead
Mohan Bhakri was never
ever a sensible man. I say this because the Bollywood horror addicts
gave him many chances to come up with an entertaining movie, which would
be considered a horror masterpiece in true sense. All he could come up
till date was not Horror, but something HORRIBLE. I don't trust Bhakri's
ability into horror. He is a kind of person who would shoot the film in
someone's backyard and claim that not even Hitchcock could make such a
movie. I am sure, Hitchcock wouldn't make such movies. What all to count
upon? Insaan Bana Shaitaan, Khooni Mahal, Cheekh (this was somewhat
better), or Kabrastan? Now Bhakri is back into action with his stolen
ideas from the American cult horror flick 'Pumpkinhead'. There is no
apparent reason for why should I prefer Bhakri's trash to Pumpkinhead.
The movie begins with a group of over aged and very mature students, who forget their way and finally end up at a village. The village men are friendly and our strangers are greeted warmly. The students come to know about a horrific past of the village. There used to be a black magician who lived in the outskirts of village. The black magician had tamed a demon. Whenever the villagers felt that they have been cheated or tormented, they sought the magician's help, who in turn would awake his demon. The demon wouldn't rest unless the culprit has been killed. Those who came on his way were also killed ruthlessly.
Due to the barbarous nature of payback, the next generation of the villagers decided not to take help of the magician as the demon used to inflict serious harms to the innocent village men as well. Now the students meet two young lovers Karan (Kiran Kumar) and the other village belle, who are betrothed and are all set to get married soon. Two students keep an evil eye on the village belle and rape her unbeknownst to the others. When Karan comes to know of rape, he sobs and asks the village headmen to punish the culprits. When the headmen decide a punishment for the strangers, Karan doesn't think it would torment them much and much to the dislike of others, heads to the magician for help.
Now the magician revives the demon with Karan's blood and the demon heads to the village to wreak havoc.
I specially remember this movie for the presence of Gurdas Mann. I don't know why he chose to act in such a useless movie. The movie has numerous plot holes. Some stammering actresses fail to convey what they want and get engaged in useless dialog deliveries. The songs are equally as dead as the movie itself. Javed Khan's role shrinks to zero with other actors but he manages to be the last man alive along with his heroine. The demon looks jaded and weak. It looks he hasn't got a crumb of bread for the past many decades. The funny thing about Bhakri's movies is that the monster is more or less like an idiot piece of scum, marked by the terrible gait and infantile gestures. I wonder if Bhakri knows that demons or monster can do whatever they want. I really don't know why they become so slow and imbecile in all the Bhakri movies.
This turgid flick was dished out in 1991 and believe me, I wasn't afraid to see it. No goosebumps, no shocking scene nothing of the kind. The only good thing about this movie is that it follows the storyline very strictly and doesn't waver away from the plot.
