Great film
Raj Sippy is know to be
the person who brought Akshay Kumar into the industry. His movie
Saugandh was Akki's debut movie and even if he made a small appearance
as a karate instructor in Mahesh Bhatt's flop film Aaaj, his main debut
was Saugandh. However, it is also known that Raj Sippy has done nothing
but given Akshay some of his worst films ever. Saugandh was a flop,
other films of this collaboration like Amaanat, Paandav are all flop
films that didn't quite work at the box office. Amaanat is actually one
of Sippy's not so good movies.
Amaanat however brings 2 action heroes Sanjay Dutt and Akshay Kumar for the first time. The story is about Sanjay Dutt and his village, he is a bus conductor and all is not well in his village. The evil and rich villains have captured all the water and won't give any water to the poor villagers. Sanjay Dutt wants to solve this but nothing is well. It turns out that little children are getting sick from drinking dirty water since they need water. Lots of injustice and clichéd moments are shown and the villains overact horribly as usual. Now what Sanju does is goes to the city of Mumbai and see's what he can do from there, the main reason he goes is because he wants to earn enough money and buy a water tank. This will solve all the problems in his village as the villagers too will have their own water to drink. However, Sanju gets robbed by some unknown thief and he is quite stressed out as he lost lots of his monthly wages. This thief turns out to be Akshay Kumar. Then lots of nonsense happens, suddenly a grieved Sanju is happy and celebrating some festivals, he is seen romancing a girl from Akki's colony. Akki falls in love with Sanju's sister and the on goings begin to get predictable and boring. Akki friendship with Sanju grows to such a limit that Akki decides to return that money to Sanju when the right time comes. One of the heroines become modernized and take revenge from Gulshan Grover a rich industrialist. The revenge is shown in a childish and clichéd way. Then Akki tells Sanju the truth and Sanju is mad on him but so both patch up and return to the village with the water. The villains steal the tanker and capture our heroes. After a long and clichéd action scene, the villagers get their water. Plus, the heroes and heroines unite.
The film has an age old formula of injustice shown, then some fun moments but ultimately a piece of crap is the result. The village scenes are engaging but the way it is shown is not even close to decent. Its like the formula to make this film was good but the application was wrong and the final result is below average. However, the village scenes are better than the city scenes as they show the pain and problems quite naturally. But, everything gets out of control as soon as the shift happens to the city. The problems have connections with some problems in the city. However, the connection fails to create a flow and then it feels like the scenes are just ad ons. Even for a 90s film, the story should be connected not partly connected and then just random scenes put together and then a rushed action filled climax.
Direction by Raj Sippy is routine, his style direction is nothing good. This films looks like another Saungandh with some clap worthy power packed dialogs from Sanju. Otherwise, Akshay Kumar's role is similar to Saugandh where his action is limited and his bogus comedy drama act was what Raj Sippy used the most. I think this guy thinks Akki's action is mindless and doesn't enterain. Yes it is mindless at times but don't forget that an action hero should have more than 1 action scene even in a crap movie. Music is badly picturised and none of them are even close to being good. For 90s music, neither do the songs have a Main Khiladi Tu Anari feel nor do they have powerful music like Yeh Dillagi's music.
Performances are quite average, Akshay Kumar does his usual thief act and he did it better in Jai Kishen from the same year. Here he just got typecast yet he does add some funny dialogs and funny moments in the second half of the film where the entertainment value was good thanks to him particularly. Sanjay Dutt was in his jail period during the time which is why the film got delayed as it was supposed to release in 1992 alongside Akshay's other flop films like Deedar and this collaborations own SAUNGANDH. He does OK and proves he can do good in serious roles but his acting in this movie is nothing to shout about. Worst part is the heroines Kaachan and the other unknown heroine don't even act like Bollywood heroines. They are awful and their pronunciations need practice. Kiran Kumar in a double role with one role changing from good to bad(originally a villain just became good to trick the villagers) does a horrible job. He does his same done to death villain's role and proves he can't do anything new. He also hams it up badly in several scenes. The rest provide average support and this time none of the supporting actors contribute above the average level.
On the whole, Amaanat is another Raj Sippy directional venture which went unnoticed. The film has several problems and the editing too is not good. Raj Sippy was never a good director. Barring his brilliant Satte Pe Sattta, a few other hits like Quayamat but then he starts making lots of craps. Overall, this is one of his regular crap films and sadly this was another wrong choice for Akshay Kumar in his would be perfect year 1994.
