Guddu (Hindi: गुड्डु, Urdu: گُڈو ‎) is a 1995 Bollywood romance film written by Abrar Alvi and directed by Prem Lalwani. The movie stars Shah Rukh Khan, Manisha Koirala, Deepti Naval, Mukesh Khanna and Mehmood. Its music was composed by Naushad. The movie bombed at the box office despite featuring top actors of the time. Shahrukh was 29 years and Manisha 25 years old when the movie was released.

Plot

Guddu Bahadur (Shah Rukh Khan) is the only child in the Bahadur family, consisting of Advocate Vikram (Mukesh Khanna) and his wife, Kavita (Deepti Naval). While Kavita is a devout and a religious Hindu, Vikram is an atheist. Guddu and Salina Gupta (Manisha Koirala) are in love. One day while driving, they have an accident and Salina loses her sight. Guddu blames himself and so do Salina's parents. Guddu is asked to keep away from Salina. Salina herself knows that the accident was not Guddu's fault, but would not like to meet Guddu and be a burden on him. Guddu overhears a conversation between their family doctor and his dad and he comes to know that he has brain tumor. He has only a few more months to live. He wants to donate his eyes to the hospital so Salina can benefit from them, but his dad will not even consider this. Things take a turn for the worse, when Guddu decides to go to court to assert his right to donate his eyes, his dad ends in the hospital and so does Guddu. Kavita couldn't bear the trauma of her husband's illness and her son's disease, thus she decides to devote herself to god for five days without drinking a sip of water. Her prayers get answered and her husband's life is saved and her son's operation is successful. She dies in the feet of god while praying and her eyes get donated to Salina. Salina and Guddu get married and are blessed with twins and they live happily ever after.

Storyline

Guddu Bahadur meets fellow collegian, Salina Gupta and both fall in love with each other. Then one day both meet in a vehicle accident resulting in Salina losing her sight; Guddu holds himself responsible for this outrage and is restricted by Salina's family not to meet with her again. Although Salina does not consider Guddu guilty she does not want to meet with him and be a burden on him. Shortly after Guddu find out that he is diagnosed with brain tumor and does not have long to live so he decides to donate his eyes to Salina after his death but this is not agreeable by Guddu's advocate father, Vikram which forces Guddu to move to court in order to ascertain his rights. Naushad saab composed music for guddu according to the film requirement, one song was disco type there is other songs like bappi lahiri and nadeem-shravan songs. Wonderful Performance!

I watched this movie recently so I realize the storytelling style is now outdated. But I immensely enjoyed watching this film. I wasn't expecting it to be great since I had never really heard anything about this movie previously but once I started to watch it I got very engaged in the story and characters. Shah Rukh Khan shows his brilliance and talent as an actor. His emotions really sink into you and you feel as if he is really going through what his character is. He does a very convincing job in this movie. The story is very endearing about an only son who is loved dearly by his polar opposite parents. His father is an atheist lawyer and his mother is a strongly religious person. SRK gets caught in the middle of these two who argue regularly on how to raise their son but he loves both parents and don't want to hurt either of them. The movie starts out very lighthearted and funny but then encounters a serious twist. This movie is worth watching especially if you love Shah Rukh, he won't disappoint you in this one!
