Singer---Asha Bhonsle Lyrics----Aslam Allahabadi M/D--------Usha Khanna Year------1969 Actor-----Shailendra, Sonia Sahni, Azra, ..

Shailendra – Like father, like son.

Shailendra 1

The eldest son of wrester-turned-action star Dara Singh (from Singh’s first marriage), Shailendra (or Shailendar), real name Pardumandara Randhawa, was born in a district of Amritsar in Punjab state. He did not follow in his father’s athletic footsteps, but instead had more of an artistic bent that pointed in the direction of literature, having written several short stories that appeared in Punjabi magazines and at least one novel titled Sughand. He was also keen to study Hindi and compose songs.

shailendra 4

Due to the respect that his father commanded in the film industry in the 1960s, Shailendra was given audience with many different film makers; unfortunately no film assignments resulted from these meetings. In the interim, Shailendra played producer, along with wrestler-actor Saudagar Singh, on his father’s film Nasihat (1967)
Then, film maker Ramanand Sagar met the young man at a party. Sagar saw something in the would-be actor that the others had not, and before long Shailendra, billed as Parduman, was playing a small role in Sagar’s Ankhen (1968), a hit action film starring Mala Sinha and Dharmendra.
In a 1969 Picturpost interview, Shailendra mentions his time on the set of Ankhen. “He [Dharmendra] had been very kind and when my first shot was okayed in Ankhen, in the third take, he was the first to congratulate me and predicted that I would come up in films very soon. I regard and  respect him as my elder brother.” He continued, “I am thankful for producer-director Ramanand Sagar for giving me the first break into films. Under him I have no doubt that I have been shaped into something useful, and it is up to the film industry to utilize my ability to the best advantage.

Shailendra 3

And utilize they did, for the following year he found himself as hero opposite Sonia Sahni in the spy film, Bandish, co-starring Azra, Ulhas, and Shyam Kumar.
Although Bandish was considered a B-grade film, it was a good vehicle for the handsome actor. He especially impressed in fight scenes, and reportedly began receiving offers to appear in stunt related films, which he laments in his Picturpost interview: “Producers always conclude that I could act only in such pictures, but being afraid of getting typed I have scrupulously avoided accepting such offers. From all points of view I have decided to wait till the release of Bandish, when my place and position in filmdom will be decided by the film world. I am not in a hurry. A good set up under a good director is far more vital for a young man like me than any indifferent roles in a number of pictures. I do not want to commit suicide by accepting all the roles that come my way. As things stand at present, the verdict of people about me after seeing Bandish is worth waiting for. Roles will come any time, but it is good roles that I want.”

Shailendra 2

His next was a supporting role in the drama Ganga Tera Pani Amrit (1971), starring Navin Nischol and Yogeeta Bali, where he shares scenes with Shatrughan Sinha and Jagdeep.

For myself, I would prefer to act in a few films, but good ones that will not be forgotten by the people. […..] I would be content if I am known as a good film artist [rather] than as a star. Even if I have to wait for a lifetime to be known as a good film artist, I would patiently wait.
Sadly, the good parts that he hoped for never came, and Ganga Tera Pani Amrit appears to be Shailendra’s last screen role. His only other film work seems to be as a lyricist; he had at least one song featured in a film and it was sung by Usha Khanna.
Was he too choosy in the roles he’d accept? Or did he simply lose interest in show business? Whatever the reason, it is a shame that he did not continue his film work. He certainly had the looks and the talent.
Today Shailendra, who left Bombay for a more rural existence, resides on his farm in Meerut, Uttar Pradash state.
