Banarasi Babu is a 1997 Indian Hindi comedy film directed by David Dhawan. The film stars Govinda, Ramya, Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoorand Bindu. The film was a remake of Tamil film Pattikada Pattanama(1972). The film was also remade in Telugu as Palletoori Bava (1973) and in Kannada as Putnanja (1995).

Gopi (Govinda) is a simpleton from Banaras. He gets married to a foreign returned Madhu (Ramya) . He is the family and faithful type. She is a daredevil, happy-go-lucky type. He represents the Indian values. She would not mind taking a dive in the village pond in a bikini. One day it was her birthday party and she starts drinking and dancing. Gopi feels ashamed about his wife being like that. He gets angry and slaps her, he noticed that he did the wrong thing but she ran away. She wants to live abroad. He wants to stay with his mother in his village. She walks out on him. Mother wants the daughter-in-law back. He decides to get the bride back but after teaching her lesson. He goes to Singapore and other foreign locales to hunt for the runaway bride. They keep meeting off and on. He also succeeds in making her pregnant and preventing the doctor from aborting the child. She delivers a baby-boy. In the meanwhile, he becomes rich and famous. He now walks away with the 15-days-old kid and comes back to his village and threatens to marry again. The stage is set for his remarriage. She appears on the scene. She wants the child back. Confrontation, She says she cannot live without the child. He says if she cannot live without her 15-days-old child then why did she want to separate his mother from her child. She realises her mistake.

Storyline
Wealthy business, Chaubey, his wife, Lily, and daughter, Madhubala, return from Britain in order to visit India and find a suitable groom for Madhubala. They are met at the airport by Vikram, who would like to marry Madhubala. Though Lily fully approves of Vikram, Chaubey dislikes him instantly. They travel to the small town where Chaubey was born, and meet with Gopi. Gopi and Madhubala take an instant liking to each other, and get married. While Chaubey approves of this marriage, Lily does not. Lily gets together with Vikram and sets about to plot separating the newly married couple. The story is old and formulaic. Madhu's (Ramya Krishnan) father Chaubey(Kader Khan) promised Gopi's (Govinda) father and mother that he would get his daughter married to their son. Kader Khan and his wife Lily, (Bindu) move to Singapore, only to return with their voluptuous daughter to the village and find a simpleton in Gopi. Opposites attract and sparks fly and much to the disapproval of Bindu, Gopi and Madhu get married. Soon Madhu realizes that she is way too modern to adapt to the rurally backward Gopi. They decide to separate. But Gopi is adamant on winning Madhu back. Does he succeed? Honestly, I don't think anyone cares by this point!
Govinda has done too many roles like this and there is nothing new to his performance. Ramya steps into Karisma Kapoor's territory and fails. Karisma's presence may have made some difference to this lifeless character. Kader Khan and Bindu are the usual. Shakti Kapoor is just too annoying.
The ever dependable Anand-Milind also disappointed with this film. Just a couple of songs are hummable. I say disappoint because their track record with David Dhawan and Govinda has always been impeccable. This was at best average.
