Frothy female action from Kanti Shah
Hailing from just
before the director's hard-right into full-on sexploitation in 2001,
Kanti Shah's MUNNIBAI is a frothy and fast- paced female action flick,
far from the director's best, but more than capable of delivering a
solid evening's entertainment.
The plot at its essence, when shorn of its hopelessly myriad complications, centers on female conflict, pitting titular bandit- for-justice Munnibai against robber's scion Heerabai (Shah's wife and muse, Sapna) for the affections of kind-hearted police captain Shankar. Having grown up together, Munnibai and Shankar have been nursing a romance since their youth, though Munnibai's father's murder at the hands of Heerabai's paterfamilias unfortunately sets their lives on different tracks. Munnibai steps outside the bounds of the law to seek revenge while Shankar leaves home to join the police force. (Heerabai, despite being around the same age, for some reason doesn't enter the picture until present day.)
As is typical with Bollywood productions, myriad complications ensue. Heerabai hatches a harebrained scheme to frame Munnibai for kidnapping a baby, but unfortunately drops the infant and causes it to fall to its death, necessitating she rescue another baby to atone for her sins. (Never mind that she's ostensibly the villain, nor that this entire episode is forgotten as soon as it's done.) Heerabai's father, the colorfully named Insane Dacoit (a Hindi term for "bandit"), raids stock-footage villages and spends most of the film laughing maniacally while trying to either rape or murder people. As expected, the film treats the subject of sexual assault with cavalier disregard, a cheap excuse for titillation and nothing more.
What distinguishes MUNNIBAI from the other films I've seen in Shah's oeuvre is the wicked war between the women at its center. No stranger to (semi-)badass heroines (Shah's femmes are generally happy to take revenge and assert their independence right alongside his men, though conversely they also tend to submit to sexual assault with disturbing readiness), Shah outdoes himself here in pitting Munnibai against her evil counterpart Heerabai, offering both the opportunity to bust out some of the best trash talk ever committed to celluloid. The ladies' competition over the kind- hearted cop is a nice flip on the genre's usual treatment of women as prize objects too, and while it would be inaccurate to say that MUNNIBAI is exactly forward-thinking in its gender politics, it still seems to take a refreshing deal of pleasure in its own jiggly brand of female empowerment.
On top of all that, I haven't even mentioned one character's surprising mid-film death and the subsequent role-switch that takes up most of the film's second half, nor a spectacular late-film digression in which Heerabai evades capture by joining a wedding dance troupe. The 110-minute copy I watched (which contained very welcome and colorful fan-subs) seemed to eliminate all the song-and- dance scenes, as well as an entire subplot (by comparison, the unsubbed version on YouTube runs 135 minutes), but with a film this wild sometimes less is more, and the missing footage proved a worthy trade for being able to understand the dialogue. While not quite top-tier Shah on the level of GUNDA or PYAASA HAIWAN, MUNNIBAI nevertheless makes for a fun watch, and is a nice shot of girl-power from a director who all-too-often traffics in pretty sleazy (albeit entertaining) female exploitation.
