The film revolves around the story of five women, belonging to different generations, each looking emancipation and the right to run their lives their own way. The film's main theme is the issue of women's 'fertility rights' empowerment.
The film won the 2000 National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare.

Plot
The movie tells the story of a middle aged Muslim woman Gazala (Shabana Azmi), who is ill treated by her husband and sent back to her parent's home, just because she is unable to give birth to a son. Gazala does have a daughter Salma (Rajeshwari Sachdev). The plot revolves around Gazala's stay at her mother's home and the problems faced by the women of the house, being her mother and sisters-in-law. The film is a beautiful description of the problems faced by women in the name of fertility, or in a different sense the urge to have a male child, especially in rural India. Shyam Benegal provides a masterpiece, reflecting on the sorrowful plight of rural Indian women. The irony lies in the point where the movie begins with a scene which shows a bull being brought to impregnate a buffalo. Five different women, each with a different story depicting the harsh realities of a woman's life.Cast

Ghazala (Shabana Azmi) has been married to Munirmiya (Srivallabh Vyas)
for several years, and has given birth to a daughter, Salma (Rajeshwari
Sachdev) Munir is unhappy that Ghazala has been unable to bear him any
sons, and is forced to face his abuse, and then is subsequently thrown
out of the house, in order to make way for him to marry again; Hasina
(Surekha Sigri-Rege) is Ghazala's mom, married at a very young age, to
an older man, faces the risk of cancer of the uterus; Educated, Arrogant
and god-fearing Afsana (Nandita Das) has three children, and is upset
with her spouse, Khurshid (Rajit Kapur), Hasina's son, for undergoing a
vasectomy, and leaves him; Najma (Alka Trivedi) is an uneducated
housewife, having given birth to seven children, five of whom have died
so far due to malnutrition, and is the wife of Khaleej, Hasina's older
son; Salma is the daughter of Ghazala, who is expected to marry at an
early age, to a much older man, as there is no point in her undergoing

A perfectly made movie
The best thing about
the movie is the way it involves you with the story. You don't feel like
watching a movie, it is like you are experiencing it as a by stander or
a nieghbour. The story telling is so seamless and realistic that you
don't even doubt the authenticity even for a second. The greatness of
Shyam Benegal is bulging out of every frame of the movie. He shows how
can you take a very common social issue and make it into an
unforgettable movie. How can you take a story which seems ordinary if
verbally narrated and make it into a movie with incredible depth.
All the casts are outstanding in their performance. My concluding comments are "Another master piece from the THE MASTER".
