Hrithik Roshan: Bollywood's new Elvis
After reading about
Hrithik Roshan, Bollywood's hottest movie star in GQ magazine, I was
truly amazed at his popularity in his native India. I later watched the
dvd release of KNPH, Hrithik Roshan's first hit movie. Directed by his
father, this spirited romp is actually a made-to-order showcase for his
handsome and talented son. Suffice to say that this film would have
been very average, save for Hrithik Roshan who carries the entire
production on his able shoulders. His charm and intense style are
certainly enough to catch the interest of most any movie-goer.
Much of the movie is devoted to loving shots of Hrithik in various poses, and I'm certain that the female audiences in Mumbai were swooning in the crowded aisles each time he sang and danced. Much of what occurs on screen looks like a Hindi pop music video made for even pre-teenage audiences. A good comparison would be to the old movies of Elvis Presley! This may have had a bit more realism and action than those, but the entire proceedings focus on Hrithik's singing, dancing, and posing in a way that glamorizes him to that extent. It's obvious that multi-talented Hrithik Roshan could make it big in the U.S. if he so desires. That's the one thing that I will certainly remember out of this somewhat shallow, but lighthearted and colorful movie.

Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (Translation: "Say... You're in love") is a 2000 Indian romantic thriller film, written and directed by Rakesh Roshan. It marks the debuts of his son Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel.
The film featured Hrithik in a double role as characters Rohit and
Raj.The story of the movie was inspired from the Kannada blockbuster
movie "Rathasaptami" (1986) starring Shivarajkumar and Asharani.
Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai was the most successful Bollywood film of 2000, becoming the highest grosser of the year.[1] It was subsequently added to the Limca Book of Records for the greatest number of awards won by a Bollywood film (102).[2] Rakesh Roshan collected his first ever Filmfare Award, which he won as producer and as director. Following the release of the film, Hrithik became an overnight superstar,[3][4] his successful debut was termed as 'Hrithik Mania' by the media.[5][6] He became the only actor to win both, the Filmfare Award for Best Debut with the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the same film.
Following the success of Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, the father-son duo went on collaborate on subsequent films such as Koi... Mil Gaya (2003), Krrish (2006), Kites (2010), Krrish 3 (2013) and Kaabil (2017).
Rohit and Sonia see each other later that night when Sonia and her friends are having a party on the beach. After Rohit sings for her, Atul (Rajesh Tandon), Malik's son and Sonia's friend, invites him on a cruise to perform. During the celebrations, Rohit and Sonia become drunk and fall into a lifeboat which separates from the ship and floats to an island. During their time in the island, they fall in love. They are eventually rescued by Saxena, who realizes their love for each other and does not approve. He demands that Malik immediately fire Rohit. Sonia's tries, and fails, to make her father see what a good man Rohit is. Saxena tells Rohit that he needs to become successful before he can marry Sonia, since she is from a rich, upper class family. Determined to prove himself, Rohit and his friends attempt to procure a record deal for him. Rohit eventually becomes a well known artist and prepares to put on a concert.
On the day of the show, Rohit goes to pick up Amit from school. Rohit witnesses the corrupt policemen and Malik shooting down a Commissioner (Ram Mohan) who has found out about their drug dealings. They discover Rohit's presence and shoot at him, wounding him. They pursue him over a bridge on the highway and knock his bike off track from the bridge causing him to fall into the river below. Rohit, who doesn't know how to swim, drowns. He is presumed dead. Amit is traumatised by the incident.
Sonia goes into depression due to Rohit's death. After some time, her father sends her to New Zealand to live with his brother. Her cousin Neeta (Tanaaz Currim) tries to help Sonia break out of her depression by taking her out to explore the New Zealand night life. There she meets Neeta's friend Raj Chopra (also Hrithik Roshan). He strikingly resembles Rohit, and he is also a singer and entertainer. Raj falls for Sonia, but his face reminds her so much of Rohit, making her more depressed. On learning her story, Raj decides to go with her back to India. After arriving in India, one of the corrupt officers spots the pair and opens fire on Raj. After Raj and Sonia escape the shooting, Raj realizes that somebody is mistaking him for Rohit. With this incident, Raj and Sonia realize that Rohit was murdered.
Raj is welcomed by Rohit's family and friends. His presence brings Amit out of his shell and he learns that Amit witnessed Rohit's murder. Raj decides to set the trap to expose the killers, posing as Rohit. Only Sonia and Rohit's acquaintances know the truth. Raj proposes his love to Sonia, and even though she likes him, she is still heartbroken about Rohit's death. Malik panics upon learning that "Rohit" is alive. Raj performs a concert in tribute to Rohit, and Mailk and the corrupt officers arrive there undercover. Saxena learns the truth about the scheme from Sonia, and he warns Malik. After the concert, Raj reveals unknown details of the shooting that he learned from Amit. Due to these details, Malik assumes that Raj really is Rohit, and that Saxena is playing a double game. Before Raj can reveal the names of the people who killed Rohit, he is shot at again by one of the corrupt officers, but is saved due to wearing a bullet-proof jacket.
In order to catch Raj (who they believe is Rohit), the corrupt officers kidnap Sonia. Raj succeeds in killing them as well as their henchmen and rescues Sonia. Malik soon arrives on the scene, revealing his motive for mercilessly pursuing Sonia and Raj. Just as Malik is about to reveal the truth about his connection to Saxena, he is shot by Saxena himself, who feigns anger at his daughter's kidnapping. Amit arrives and immediately recognizes Malik as the man who killed Rohit. He tells Raj that on the day of the shooting, Malik was talking to someone named 'Sir ji' over the phone. Raj finds Sir ji's number in Malik's cell phone and makes a call. When Saxena's phone rings, Raj understands everything. On being confronted, Saxena confesses everything in front of Sonia and Raj before being arrested.
Sonia and Raj return to New Zealand, taking Amit with them. They get engaged with the blessings of their family and friends.
The ship scenes were filmed aboard the Star Flyer.[9] The island scenes were filmed in Krabi, Thailand in the area near James Bond Island.[10]
Sabiha Kalolwala of The Indian Express wrote, "Rakesh Roshan has been smart enough to make a film which encompasses all the facets of acting — drama, action, romance, comedy and tragedy, all of them enacted pretty well by Hritik Roshan." Of the soundtrack, he wrote, "There is not even one song which is not enjoyable."[15] Anupama Chopra, reviewing the film for India Today wrote, "... Rakesh has taken the routine love story, added a thriller twist and narrated it with style. KNPH isn't about path-breaking craft, it's about blockbuster presentation. Rakesh's sweat and money are apparent in every frame." She concluded writing, "What doesn't work is the tired villain track. Kher, one of Bollywood's finest, hams from frame one. Perhaps the idea of playing disgruntled papa yet again was too tedious. His post-climax repenting is almost comical. The rest of the gang isn't much better. The plot is as stale as the performances."[16] Kanchana Suggu of Rediff.com called the film a "great entertainer" and wrote, "One must say Rakesh Roshan knew what he was doing when he cast Hrithik as the lead. The boy is good. The ease and style with which he dances, emotes, fights, makes one forget this is his debut film. He’s had to essay two different characters, and he’s done justice to both." Also commending the performances of other actors, she wrote praises of other departments in that the "music is good, the songs are catchy, the cinematography is appealing, the direction is unobtrusive and the story is actually 'different'."[17]
The film's music was composed by Rajesh Roshan. Lyrics were by Saawan Kumar Tak,
Vijay Akela and Ibrahim Ashq. The songs "Ek paal ka jeena", "Na tum
jano na hum", "Chand Sitaare" and the title song "Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai"
were chartbusters. The rest of songs were also very popular. The album
became the best-selling Bollywood soundtrack of the year.[23]

Production
The film was launched in 1998 with Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor as the lead actors. However, the latter walked out a few days after the launch, following a "misunderstanding" between the director Rakesh Roshan and Kareena's mother Babita.[7] Rakesh, who had known Ameesha Patel's family for long then, cast her in the role.[8]The ship scenes were filmed aboard the Star Flyer.[9] The island scenes were filmed in Krabi, Thailand in the area near James Bond Island.[10]
Reception
Critical reception
Upon theatrical release, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai received highly positive reviews from the critics and was declared an "All-Time Blockbuster". The performance of Hrithik was well praised, and the music received positive reviews.[11] Most critics noted the storyline was clichéd. Planet Bollywood's Alok Kumar said "I'm telling you all to go see KNPH, a movie with which I had low expectations. The film ended up being very entertaining."[12] Ajay Chaturvedi of Apunkachoice.com said "The film suffers from a bad script." But he praised the performance and dancing of Hrithik saying, "The highlight ... is Hrithik Roshan who has good screen presence, He has acted quite well considering that this is his debut film and he is a brilliant dancer." He praised the music saying "it is a big plus with "Na Tum Jano Na Hum" and "Ek Pal Ka Jeena" being the pick of the lot."[13] The reviewer for Filmfare rated the film three-and-a-half out of five, and wrote, "Rakesh Roshan has come up with a winner. A racy script, excellent product values and taut editing result in a storyline that keeps the audience hooked throughout. The music is also good, especially the title song and numbers such as Ek pal ka jeena and Chand sitare. Hrithik is very good in the action and dance sequences, and proves his acting calibre in his very first film. Amisha too performs well."[14]Sabiha Kalolwala of The Indian Express wrote, "Rakesh Roshan has been smart enough to make a film which encompasses all the facets of acting — drama, action, romance, comedy and tragedy, all of them enacted pretty well by Hritik Roshan." Of the soundtrack, he wrote, "There is not even one song which is not enjoyable."[15] Anupama Chopra, reviewing the film for India Today wrote, "... Raveena Tandon’s Blog On Kangana Ranaut-Hrithik Roshan Controversy Is Going Viral!
Everyone
saw the whole Kangana Ranaut – Hrithik Roshan controversy unfold over
the past couple of months and undoubtedly Kangana had to face a lot of
cat-cries and criticism. Some even called her ugly names. Though Kangana
and Hrithik have decided to stop their mud-slinging and do it by the
book and via proper legal channels, colleague Raveena Tandon has given
us an inside picture of the whole controversy that shook Bollywood and
its followers.
Constant
in her support to Kangana in this fight, Raveena mentions that heroines
have suffered far too much in the hands of their powerful male
counterparts. Raveena mentions that most of the heroines might be
secretly rooting for Kangana as they can identify with the fiesty
actress, who had the guts to face it all and yet be calm about it.
Here are some excerpts from Raveena‘s column:
“I
remember first seeing Kangana when she won the newcomers award at an
award show in London many years ago, what really impressed me about her
was in her acceptance speech , she humbly stated that I will speak in
Hindi as my English is not so good. That statement from her won the
audiences heart. She I believe, is someone who will tell the truth, and
stand by it. Some do believe and I do too that intimate details about a
relationship need not be made public as what happens between two people
is for them to know and decide, who are we to judge? But it’s her choice
to stand up and fight for if she does feel wronged and believes that
she needs to get the truth out in the open .
The
industry was and maybe is still a hero oriented where terms and
conditions are dictated by super star male actors. But the slight shift
is there for all to see. Much before my generation, in the 70’s some
heroines were driven to paranoia and ultimately declare schizophrenics
and written off. A gorgeous model actress was found dead after being
labelled that and another beauty queen/model/actress was beaten up black
and blue by a hero husband and his wife! She lost an eye and her
career. In 90’s (my generation) the girls fought back but silently. If
they spoke, either they were labelled pathological liars or as the macho
heroes would show their bravado by threatening in the next glossy
headline as how they would smash the girls face or bash her the next
time they saw her or she spoke about them – whereas the girls would
quietly pick up the pieces of their hearts and careers and try to let
their work speak.
Most
of the heroines I know secretly might be rooting for Kangana and
identifying on some of the points that she’s made. If I applaud Kangana
today, is not for that I have already judged who is right or in the
wrong, just that it’s high time women find their voice, speak up, and
get their due out there.”

New Delhi:
Actress Kangana Ranaut's explosive interviews to various news channels last week, has started a debate in Bollywood all over again. While promoting her forthcoming film Simran, Kangana said she would like an apology from actor Hrithik Roshan, whom she claims to have dated. Choreographer Farah Khan, who earlier picked old friend Hrithik's side, now said that for her 'feminism meant equality' and if a man would have made statements like this he would have faced the society's brunt, reports news agency PTI. Without taking names, Farah said, "I don't want to take anyone's name. I don't want to get caught in between. But every time you are playing a woman's card. For me feminism is equality. In such a scenario a man should put himself in a woman's shoes and vice versa and then it becomes easy to understand each other. One should deal with such matters carefully."
In an interview to India TV, Kangana also commented on her alleged relationship with Aditya Pancholi and Adhyayan Suman. Of the whole controversy, Aditya Pancholi reportedly said he would take 'legal action' against the actress while Adhyayan reacted and said that he's 'caught up with more important things in life.'
Farah further told PTI, "Just imagine if a man had said something like a woman, what would have happened. If a man had sent a picture or said anything like this, that man's life would have become hell or he might have been taken to the jail. If such things are not acceptable for a man, why it should be for woman?"
The Kangana-Hrithik feud dates back to January 2016, after the actor sent her a legal notice demanding an apology for appearing to refer to him as a 'silly ex' in an interview. Kangana responded with a legal notice. Hrithik further filed a police complaint claiming that an imposter had been corresponding with Kangana pretending to be him. In the interview, Kangana claimed that she still wants Hrithik to find the imposter and bring him in front of her. Kangana claimed Hrithik sent her various e-mails but is now denying. Hrithik has always denied their alleged romance. Kangana Ranaut and Hrithik Roshan co-starred in films Kites and Krrish 3.
Singer Sona Mohapatra has accused Kangana Ranaut of using the platforms to promote her film while Hrithik's ex-wife Sussanne posted a picture of herself with the actor and wrote, "There is no allegation or a sad evil plot that can have the weight to triumph over a good soul."
