Dhoop (Hindi: धूप [ˈd̪ʱuːp], English: Sunshine) is a 2003 Bollywood war drama film directed by Ashwini Chaudhary, based on Battle of Tiger Hill. [1] [2] The film stars Om Puri and Revathi and is loosely based on Captain Anuj Nayyar, MVC and his family.[3] [4]
Capt Rohit Kapoor (Sanjay Suri) is a young officer in the 17 Jat Regiment of the Indian Army. His father Prof Suresh Kumar Kapoor (Om Puri), is a professor of economics in the Delhi School of Economics. His mother Sarita Kapoor (Revathi), is a librarian at the Delhi University Central Library. He is engaged to be married to Pihu Verma (Gul Panag).
The story-line of the movie takes place between 1999–2002, beginning with the death of Captain Kapoor while successfully defeating insurgents to capture Pt 4875 on the western side of Tiger Hill, Kargil.
The news is a huge shock to his family and the first half of the film portrays their attempts to cope with their grief. They receive messages of condolence from various high government officials as they attempt to come to terms with their loss.
As compensation for the loss of their son, the government allots them a franchise for running a petrol pump (gas station). Mrs Savita Kapoor is aghast at such an offer, and the family is not inclined to avail of this compensation. However, after a visit from Major Kaul, Capt Kapoor's immediate senior in the Regiment, Prof. Kapoor and Pihu feel it might be a worthy site to commemorate the memory of Rohit and decide to take up the offer. Savita gets convinced by her husband Prof. Kapoor.
However, as they attempt to make this dream a reality, they encounter massive corruption and red tape at various levels of Indian bureaucracy. They are threatened and humiliated by various government officials and hooligans. However, the family perseveres in the face of immense odds and continues to struggle. The latter half of the film narrates the story of their mission.
Om Puri's superb portrayal of the courageous Prof. Kapoor and Revathi's sensitive depiction of his wife Savita are particularly notable among a slew of other substantial contributions from a stellar supporting cast. The movie marks the cinematic debut of Gul Panag who essays her role with quiet dignity.
The film also has an evocative sound track with songs sung by Jagjit Singh, Hariharan, Shreya Ghoshal and the Wadali brothers. Jagjit Singh's ghazals, in particular, lend an added lustre to the film with touching lyrics by Nida Fazli and soulful music by Lalit Sen.
Prof Nayyar's struggles continued for several years, and the film serves to highlight the appalling treatment meted out to the families of courageous Indian soldiers who gave their lives in protecting the nation.[12]

Storyline
Right from Peon to Principal, and from the most lowly menial staff to
the office of the Prime Minister, modern secular India is embedded in
corruption by officials who brag that even if Mahatma Gandhi were to
approach them to grant access to his very own Sabarmati Ashram, he would
not be spared. In this era a honest man is defined as one who readily
accepts a bribe and does the needful, while a dishonest man is one who
accepts a bribe but refuses to do the needful. It is in this atmosphere
that the Kapoor family live. This family consists of Suresh Kumar
Kapoor, a Professor at a Delhi college; his wife, Sarita, who is a
Librarian, and a son who is Captain Rohit in the 7th Jat Regiment of the
Indian Army. Suresh is pitted against the corrupt system when he
receives word that his son has been killed in Kargil, when the fragile
truce between Pakistan and India was broken, resulting in thousands of
deaths on both sides. In condolence, Suresh and Sarita receive messages
from various army ... Written by

Apparently Sir Winston Churchill said
these words as an argument on why India should not be granted
independence, by predicting how the situation in India would become if
it were to be granted freedom: “Power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues, freebooters; all Indian leaders will be of low caliber

uncorrupted movie.
The only name that drew
me to this movie was Om Puri. This actor has a commanding voice and an
astounding screen presence so much, the younger actors have lot to learn
from this veteran of method acting. The movie is an expose of Indian
corruption on the background of martyrdom of a young son and the
family's struggle to cope with it. Some scenes are very heartfelt and
moving with flashbacks that seem enough to portray the depth of
affection in the family. The tenacity of a father and his
daughter-in-law(she considers herself a widow even though she was only
engaged to him at his death-played seemingly well by a debutant actress)
to take a road uphill againest all odds, is well told. Even though the
movie lacks the typical Bollywood decorations, it is still gripping
mainly because of the heartwarming story and Om Puri.
