Fida (translation: Infatuated) is an Indian Hindi romantic thriller film released in 2004. The film, directed by Ken Ghosh, stars Fardeen Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor and Kim Sharma. This is the first film in which Kareena Kapoor played a negative role. The film just recovered its budget.^{[citation needed]}

Plot

Somebody empties the bank accounts of many people, including Babu Anna (Akhilendra Mishra), an underworld don, via an Internet theft. The police are clueless about the robber, and Anna wants revenge. In another story, Jai Malhotra (Shahid Kapoor) lives with his best friend, Sonia (Kim Sharma). He meets Neha Mehra (Kareena Kapoor) and falls in love with her instantly. At first Neha rejects Jai, causing him to attempt suicide. After Sonia chastises Neha regarding Jai's actions, she then falls for him too.
One day, Jai sees Neha trying to hang herself after getting a phone call. She tells him that her dead father owed a huge amount of money to Babu Anna's underworld. To repay the amount, he became part of a gang of hackers who were responsible for the Internet thefts. After his death, Babu's Anna underworld began pursuing Neha to recover the money. Jai and Neha try to sell their apartments to get enough money, to no avail. A visit from a client leads Jai to consider robbing a bank to get the necessary money. At a bank, Jai spots a rich man named Vikram Singh (Fardeen Khan) withdrawing a huge sum of money and instead decides to steal from him. However, Vikram catches Jai during his attempts to break into his house.
Instead of reporting Jai to the police, Vikram demands an explanation for his actions. Upon learning the whole story, Vikram reveals that he is the hacker behind the internet thefts but agrees to help Jai. In return, Jai has to take the blame for the thefts. Jai agrees, gives the money to Neha and turns himself in. Jai is escorted by police to be presented for the trial, but Anna has his men intercept them to kidnap Jai. A shootout results between the gang and police as Jai is able to escape and runs to Neha's apartment, only to find both Neha and Vikram waiting for him. He is horrified to learn that they conspired against him to steal all the money and Neha's love was just a ruse to con him to take a fall.
Jai escapes from the apartment, but is shot off a train by a police officer. Even though his body is not found, he is presumed dead. Two months later, Neha and Vikram start getting anonymous phone calls. Neha believes that the calls are from Jai and that he is still alive. Jai, who is very much alive, is bent on getting revenge on both Neha and Vikram.
Jai makes life miserable for both Vikram and Neha. One day when Neha and Vikram go out for a movie, Vikram finds Neha hanging by her neck in the toilet, and Neha confirms that Jai is alive. Vikram out of rage tracks Jai down and severely beats him up, threatening to murder him if he comes back into their lives again. Vikram then reports Jai to Babu Anna, thus giving him a whiff of the affair. This does not deter Jai as he later blackmails Vikram by kidnapping Neha, forcing him to turn himself in. Vikram obliges and is lead to Neha; however, all three are intercepted and taken hostage by Babu Anna and his gang, demanding all his money from them. Jai cleverly deflects Anna and forces Vikram to transfer Anna's money back into his account. Catching them off guard, Jai and Vikram finish Anna and his gang.
In the melee, Vikram has Jai cornered but Jai finally overpowers him. However, Neha strikes Jai hard from behind, allowing Vikram to gun Jai down. Vikram and Neha mock Jai as they watch him struggle with his fatal injuries. Jai stuns the two by rising with Babu Anna's gun and shoots Neha in the forehead, killing her instantly, to Vikram's horror. Jai collapses and boasts about settling the score for once whilst finally succumbing to his injuries, leaving Vikram alone to grieve over Neha's corpse. Later, a news reporter reveals that somebody has made a very hefty and generous donation to the Missionary Charity Fund, whilst Vikram is shown heading out in a boat. Thus it is implied that Vikram gave away all of Babu Anna's money to charity as he no longer has any good use for it.

Music

The soundtrack was composed by Anu Malik. Lyrics were by Sameer. Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor lent their voices for the track Aaja Ve Maahi (Ek Main Hoon). Singer Alisha Chinoy lent her voice for the popular number " Maine Jisko Chaha", making a successful comeback with Malik after their controversy in 1996.
The soundtrack was very popular, and the song "Nazar Nazar" was a chartbuster . According to the Indian trade website Box Office India, with around 14,00,000 units sold, this film's soundtrack album was the year's tenth highest-selling.^[1]

Storyline

Fida tells the story of Jai who one day happen to meet a young and beautiful woman called Neha and he falls in love with her at first sight. However trying to persuade Neha was in vane to Jai, because she has no such feelings for him as he has for her. Jai turn crazy in love with Neha and couldn't find no more alternative to persuade her than suicide but his suicide attempt is unsuccessful since he is save by his best friend and Neha finally falls in love with Jai. Little by little Jai began to know that he is in love with a criminal daughter and her father owes 60 million to the underworld don. Jai decides to help Neha by grabbing the money for her because he is in love with her, to fulfilled his motive he decides to rob a bank but follow computer hacker Vikram to his house where he was trapped in a net. Neha his love turn against him and goes towards Vikram. The two accounts that were hacked by the bank belongs to underworld don Babu Anna and he also begins to chase Jai. Jai now has... The movie may not be a masterpiece. But it is very good and not your regular run to the mill stuff. Flying story is that a guy falls in love with a girl who in fact is double crossing him. Her real boyfriend sets up this guy in a high profile internet bank robbery case which he has committed and gets the girl and the money while the guy somehow escapes police & the mafia don to hit back at the couple.

If someone wants to learn about how technically a film is to be made just look at this movie. Every technical area whether photography, cinematography, sound, direction, choreography etc. just oozes class.

Shahid Kapur as lead actor impresses to the hilt. He is the new star icon on the Hindi( just don't call it Bollywood please) movie horizon after Hrithik Roshan and sure would go a long way. His cute innocence impresses the audience and specially teen girls I guess :-). It is the first time that I have liked Kareena & Fardeen too. Kareena really looks good & Fardeen shows an impressive personality. People might say the movie story resembles Humraaz. But still the screenplay is racy and fully engrossing even if you guess the story. The direction by Ken Ghosh is the best. The guy is so exacting in his job that he has edited down the movie to mere 2 hours(rare in Hindi movies) and the results show - there is not even a single moment in the movie when you feel bored or look the other way. Great work Ken!!!

Music is really good but "Nazar Nazar" stands out, the other songs are just as melodious. And they have been shot really tastefully, very much expected as director Ken Ghosh was a music video director before he ventured into the movies and the class shows. All in all both Shahid Kapur and Ken Ghosh impress after their earlier hit movie "Ishq Vishq". The movie is total entertainment and full value of money. I guess a lot of people find a lot of problems in the movie, to them I would say rather than finding pointless mistakes try appreciating something once a while. Definite watching advised.

The offscreen chemistry between Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapur was supposed to take the box office by storm in their first film together, Fida, which released on August 20.
But the film, directed by Ken Ghosh and costarring Fardeen Khan, has proved to be a damp squib.

Fida's music had soared up the charts, and the movie was expected to become a hit. But trade figures tell a different story.

In the second week after its release, Fida is dropping in all the centres and is expected to make huge losses for its distributors. It received a lukewarm opening in the US and UK as well.

Confirming the slump, trade analyst Taran Adarsh claims one of the reasons for the film's failure is the script.
"The film is very gripping till the interval, but after that, it gets confusing. Another problem is that the film does not have a happy ending. So, families have stayed away from it. Fida is meant more for the youth and multiplex kind of audiences," he says.

Fida sees Kareena playing a negative role for the first time in her career. Since the plot was kept under wraps, her fans were taken by surprise by the revelation.
However, Adarsh points out the film is very stylish and was promoted very well on television, the credit for which, he, says, must be given to director Ken Ghosh and the producer, TIPS.

Ghosh feels differently.
"I don't agree Fida has fared badly," the director told rediff.com
"It is an average hit. Nobody has lost money. Moreover, you can't give a verdict on a film after two weeks [of its release]. You have to wait for at least five weeks."

This is Ghosh's second film, after the surprise hit, Ishq Vishk, starring Shahid, Amrita Arora and Shenaz Treasurywalla.
"When we started with Fida," he says, "we knew it was a risky subject. There are two kind of filmmakers -- the first kind is those who go by the formula kind of films with a safe script; the second kind is those who take risks. We were from the second type, who takes risks."

Ghosh believes a certain section of the Hindi film industry want to sully his name by terming his film a flop.
"Some people don't want me and Shahid to succeed," he says, "therefore, they keep saying our film is not doing well. If you read the film reviews in all the major newspapers and web sites, you will see that they have liked it."
Another trade pundit Vinod Mirani feels the script did not match the cast.
"The stars were miscast in Fida. It was an adult kind of film. Kareena, Fardeen, Shahid did not suit those roles," he says.

"Now, feel-good films like Hum Tum are doing well," says Mirani. "A thriller like Fida will never work. I feel the film was bad overall."
Asked why Kareena and Shahid's real life romance didn't click in reel life, Mirani believes, "These things are in the past. You see them together in magazines and on television. So, the urge to watch them on screen is not high. If you want to see them making a hit, then you have to make a good film. That's it."
