The first unit deployed is the 1st battalion of 11 Gorkha Rifles (1/11 Gorkha Rifles) who are specialists in high-altitude warfare. 1/11 GR's commanding officer is Col. Lalit Rai (Sudesh Berry), and the battalion has the charismatic and brave Manoj Pandey (Ajay Devgan) leading one of its platoons. Subsequently, the 18th battalion of The Grenadiers (18 Grenadiers), which was in the Kashmir Valley guarding against terrorist infiltration, are deployed in Kargil. The battalion is led by Col. Khushal Thakur (Raj Babbar), and among the officers and soldiers are men like Lt. Col. R. Vishwanathan (Mohnish Behl), Maj. Rajesh Adhikari (Karan Nath), Lt. Balwan Singh (Akshaye Khanna), Capt. Sachin Nimbalkar (Vineet Sharma), and Yogendra Singh Yadav (Ashutosh Rana & Manoj Bajpai). The Grenadiers are followed by 17th battalion of the Jat Regiment (17 Jat) lead by Col. Umesh Singh Bawa (Kiran Kumar) and has Capt Anuj Nayyar (Saif Ali Khan). They are followed by 13th battalion of the Jammu & Kashmir Rifles (13 JAK Rif) commanded by Lt.Col Y.K Joshi (Sanjay Dutt) and has Capt. Vikram Batra (Abhishek Bachchan) with them. Other Battalions are subsequently inducted into the theatre of conflict. Indian Air Force launches Photo-Recce missions in order to identify the intruders.
The first assault is by the 1/11 Gorkha Rifles advance platoon led by Lt. Manoj Pandey who first captures Yaldar village and links with the beleaguered and severely mauled company of 3rd Punjab battalion. The company members reveal that earlier Patrols of 3rd Punjab and 16 Grenadiers had gone missing in Kukerthang sector. They follow up to launch its attack on Kukarthang post, a very heavily defended enemy position supported by mortar units and artillery batteries on the Pakistani side of LOC. The Gorkhas take Kukarthang after suffering 9 Gorkhas as casualties. It is later revealed that the size of Infiltration was much larger than previously thought. Indian Army Planners believe approx 3,000 members of Pakistan Army's 5th Northern Light Infantry are involved.
The second battle is at the strategic Tololing mountain which sits astride National Highway 1D, the main supply route for the entire northern Kashmir sector including Siachen and Leh. The 18th Grenadiers first link up with a severely beaten 16th Grenadiers Battalion and get a first hand knowledge of the situation. The first company of 18 Grenadiers, led by Maj. Adhikari, attacks Tololing. The company is held up midway due to heavy fog; it waits for clear weather. The men, while resting suffer intense shelling, thus causing panic and suffering casualties. They try to get to safety by moving up the mountain but are pushed down by heavy small arms fire from intruders who are well dug atop the mountain. Subsequent counter-attacks from the Indians are stifled by stiff resistance, in the absence of artillery support for the Indians, claiming the lives of Maj. Adhikari and Lt. Col. Vishwanathan. The 18 Grenadiers make 4 attempts to recapture Tololing but are repeatedly beaten back.
Meanwhile, 17th Jat lead by Maj Deepak Rampal (Sanjay Kapoor) capture a Pakistani Mortar position. They subsequently liberate an important peak, but suffer casualties. Col Bawa tasks them to capture Pt 4850.
18 Grenadiers are relieved by 2 Rajputana Rifles, commanded by Col. Ravindranath (Ashish Vidyarthi), which moves in with an artillery battery of 110 mm field artillery and acclimatised troops. They launch a multi-pronged attack under artillery cover which ends in success but at the cost of losing many officers and ranks, including Capt. Vijayant Thapar (Amar Upadhyay), Maj. Padmapani Acharya (Nagarjuna Akkineni) and Maj. Vivek Gupta (Himanshu Malik). All this happens while 13 JAK Rif, led by Lt. Col. Yogesh Kumar Joshi (Sanjay Dutt) stands by in case 2 Raj Rif fails. Meanwhile, Indian Air Force has Launched Combat Sorties (Operation Safed Sagar) and is seen bombing enemy positions.
13 JAK Rif is blooded at Rocky Knob where they take the field after suffering heavy casualties. They follow it up with another victory at Point 5140 where Lt. Vikram Batra (Abhishek Bachchan) distinguishes himself by taking the south face of Pt 5140 without any casualties and is promoted to captain.
The decisive phase of the war has come. 18 Grenadiers are assigned to take Tiger Hill, 17 Jat to Three Pimple complex feature, 1/11 Gorkha Rifles to Khalubar Ridge and 13 JAK Rif to Bunker Complex. After a heavy Barrage of Bofors 18 Grenadiers take Tiger Hill after a daring stealth attack by the elite Ghatak section, losing its lead Nk. Yogendra Singh Yadav (Ashutosh Rana). Only one of them, the other grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav (Manoj Bajpayee) survives to link up with the rest of the battalion. 17 Jat suffers heavy casualties with Capt. Anuj Nayyar (Saif Ali Khan) and several others killed and injured, but is able to secure Three Pimple complex.
1/11 Gorkha Rifles links up with 22 Grenadiers at the base of Khalubar Ridge after braving an intense creeping barrage of artillery. Pandey somehow keeps the sagging morale of the weary unit up till the battalion begins its attack. The plans go awry as 1/11 Gorkha's commanding officer Col. Rai is injured by machine gun fire. Pandey volunteers to take out the bunkers which are holding up the attack. The machine guns are taken out, but Pandey is killed in action.
The last battle is fought by the 13 JAK Rif attacking Bunker Complex, but the unit gets split up. Capt. Batra is sent to link up with Capt. Nagappa (Nagender Choudhary) who has been captured one bunker and surrounded by the enemy. Batra links up with Nagappa but is pinned down himself by heavy enemy fire. He single-handedly takes out two bunkers but is mortally wounded. 13 JAK Rif pursues the enemy to the LOC but stops due to orders not to cross it. Finally, India declares Operation Vijay a success and victory and secures all its captured heights.

A Tribute To Those Who Never ReturnedIn 2003, after a long time and a lot of work such as research and the availability of dates from various actors, the movie was finally released.
In 1999, Pakistani backed Mujahideen, infiltrate the "Line of Control" in not just one area but several in the Indian Administered region of Kashmir. At first the Indian army fails to realise what has happened until some of its patrol troops fail to return. Its only when they are found dead, and with the help of some of the survivors, that the senior officers realise that the infiltration is not only in just one sector of the "LoC" but in several such as Dras and Batalik. The troops that are there are not enough. All members of the armed forces are requested to report to their respective camp headquarters; from which they are ordered to move towards the region and push back "the unknown enemy." At the same time equipment is ordered to be moved but this takes a bit longer.
The cast includes: Saif Ali Khan as "Captain Anuj Nayyar," Ajay Devgan as "Manoj Pandey," Sanjay Dutt as "Colonel Y.K. "Joe" Joshi," Abhishek Bachchan as "Captain Vikram Batra," Sunil Shetty as "Rifleman Sanjay Kumar," Akshay Khanna, Rani Mukerjee, Esha Deol and Kareena Kapoor. There's also a small role for the Amar Uphadya, who, incidentally, first played the role of "Mihir Virani" in the successful TV series, "Kyunke Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi." The film, though long in terms of time, is not boring for those who like to watch "war" movie and had J.P. Dutta included the Air Force side of the conflict as well as some other incidents, then this movie would have been much longer. But in coming to conclusion, the movie does provide with some breath taking scenery, action as well as special effects. All the actors have played their roles very well and the music score by Anu Malik is worthwhile and the lyrics by Javed Akhtar are superbly written and especially "Mein Kahi Bhi Rahu" and "Simaya Pukar Rahe." As I walked out of the cinema, I heard someone comment: "It didn't make any difference! I don't know where Line of Control is" and to that I felt like replying: "Look it up and you will see that its in Kashmir and think of all those brave men who were killed in action. Just think that they never returned to their families or to their loved ones."

Saathiyon tumko miley ae
