Maqbool is a 2003 Indian crime tragedy[1][2] directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and starring Pankaj Kapur, Irrfan Khan, Tabu and Masumeh Makhija in an adaptation of the play Macbeth by Shakespeare.
The plot of the film is based on that of Macbeth with regard to events and characterisation. The film did not perform remarkably at the box office, but won director Vishal Bhardwaj international acclaim. Apart from directing it, he had also composed the background score and songs for the film. Bhardwaj then moved on to adapting William Shakespeare's Othello in his 2006 film Omkara which won him commercial as well as critical success. He then directed Haider in 2014 adapting Hamlet, leading to what is now called his Shakespeare trilogy.[3]
The film had its North American premiere at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival. Though the film failed to garner much of an audience during its theatrical run in India, critics were appreciative and Pankaj Kapur went on to win a Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Critics) and a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. The film was screened in the Marché du Film section of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.[4]

Plot

The film is based on William Shakespeare's Macbeth, with the Mumbai underworld as its backdrop. Maqbool (Irrfan Khan) is the right-hand man of Jahangir Khan (alias Abba Ji) (Pankaj Kapur), a powerful underworld don. Maqbool is grateful and feels a close connection and personal indebtedness to Abba Ji. Seeing their close relationship, but also sensing Maqbool's ambition, two corrupt policemen (Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah) predict that Maqbool will soon take over the reins of the Mumbai Underworld from Abba Ji.
Nimmi (Tabu) is Abba Ji's mistress, but she and Maqbool are secretly in love. Nimmi encourages Maqbool's ambitions and persuades him to kill Abba Ji to take over as Don. Maqbool is torn between his love for Nimmi and his loyalty to Abba Ji, but he begins to prepare the ground for becoming a Don, by ensuring that others in the line of succession cannot interfere. Finally, Maqbool murders Abba Ji in cold blood while he is in bed at night, with Nimmi next to him. Maqbool gets away with the murder and takes over as Don, just as planned; but both he and Nimmi are haunted by guilt, seeing Abba Ji's ghost and unable to wash the blood from their hands. There is also suspicion, within the gang, of Maqbool's role in the death of Abba Ji, and eventually the lovers meet a tragic end.
In addition to the portrayals of the three tragic heroes, the film offers performances by supporting cast members, in particular Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah. The two open the film in their roles as black comic relief corrupt police inspectors-cum-astrologers, predict the fall of Abba Ji—who has them on his payroll—and the rise and fall of Maqbool. Contrary to the original play, the corrupt cops are not just passive soothsayers. In an effort to sustain what they refer to as "balancing forces," they are also actively involved in shaping events, like aiding in providing information to Abba Ji's enforcers to wipe out a rival gang, using subtle nuances in coercing Maqbool to shift loyalties, deliberately botching an "encounter" attempt on Riyaz Boti (Macduff) and subsequently setting up an alliance between a rival politician (the incumbent one was backed by Abba Ji) and a fleeing Guddu (Fleance) and Riyaz Boti against Maqbool.

Reception

Maqbool received universal critical acclaim . Rediff described the film as "a visual gallery that is an intelligent blend of dark, tragic overtones and comic, satirical undertones".[5] Variety wrote that while the visuals are great, audiences might need an understanding of Macbeth to fully enjoy the film.[6] India Today described it as a "haunting operatic tragedy".[7] Outlook said that it "effectively transported the essence of the story to the milieu of the Bombay underworld of our times".[8]

Give Vishal Bharadwaj a solid pat on the back, and sit back waiting for his next movie.
8 May 2005 | by See all my reviews

Give Vishal Bharadwaj a solid pat on the back, and sit back waiting for his next movie. This man seethes brilliance in his film-making. His dialogues, his script, his music, and his direction - all are top-notch, and as I said, this movie proves that Makdi was no fluke.

The movie is based on Macbeth; and oh does it stay faithful to the story. For setting, Vishal trades the Lord & Lady for 'Bhai' (Gangster) and Mistress in today's Mumbai underworld complete with corrupt cops, loads of handguns and conniving politicians.

The story follows Maqbool (Macbeth: Irfan Khan), the right-hand man of Abbaji (King Duncan: Pankaj Kapoor) - the most powerful and influential ganglord in Mumbai. Abbaji's mistress Nimmi (Lady Macbeth: Tabu) falls in love with Maqbool & inspires him to kill Abbaji and take-over his empire. What they did not expect was the surfacing of guilt, and loyals to Abbaji.

Vishal projects the story from inside the crime-family, playing with the loyalties of the viewer. Every character is built deep; you can't find yourself rooting for or against anyone, so justified is each in his/her actions. Add to that the wonderful dialogues & screenplay hiding a mock to reality, society and movies. Watching this movie alone at home, I applauded on a regular basis - so fulfilling was the experience.

The best 'character translation' of the play for me was morphing the three witches that haunt Macbeth into the two corrupt cops, as played by the brilliant-to-a-fault Naseeruddin Shah & Om Puri. The two actors signed up for the smaller roles just to have a chance to work with each other after a long time, and oh are there sparks on screen. If this was Hollywood, we would see a spin-off on their characters. Most of the hum-our-draped satire comes from these two, and it is the kind of hum-our you shake your head at, not roll laughing at. Although I like Naseer more, Om gets and does the better part here.

Irfan Khan IS the successor of these two actors. He again portrays a character as if he was born to play it. From his matter-of-fact way of delivering lines to the screamingly clear eyes, he is a treat to watch. Tabu plays Lady Macbeth as her usual self. Nothing beyond competent, but nothing below either.

And Pankaj Kapoor: He again proves how under-rated he is. From the tormented scientist in Ek Doctor ki Maut to the hilarious possessive father in Chameli ki Shaadi, this guy has done all of the variety and is as good as the best, but never got the recognition that Naseer & Om got. Indeed, Kapoor redefines the Indian gang lord, and surpasses all previous attempts at such a role. His Abbaji is the most captivating character in the movie, yet the most firmly rooted in reality. It defines: If Mumbai has a Godfather, this is he or how he should be.

Each of the actors that have portrayed their respective characters, I can't think of even one major character being replaced by any other in bollywood.

I rate this film 4.5 of 5

----

Trivia: - The first scene of the movie shows a minion with Naseer & Om Puri. This thin faced bald actor is the co-screen-writer Abbas Tyrewala putting in a cameo. - Naseerudding Shah conducted a workshop for all actors in the movie for a few days before start of filming, to get everyone in character and for natural interactions. - Shekhar Kapoor saw this movie at a European (I forget which) Film Festival, and offered Vishal a movie then & there. They discussed plans till dawn. - Macbeth is Vishal's favourite play. He wanted to make a movie for mature audiences after his debut with the children's movie Makdee (Shabana Azmi played the witch for free in that one!)

to me

I watched this movie for the first time before writing this article and regretted not having watched this film on the big screen. It is a fantastic film, more of human relation story than the underworld. I do not think that any one among the actors can replace Pankaj Kapur in the role of Mumbai’s mafia don, Abbaji. Irrfan Khan in the role of Maqbool has portrayed his character in such a way that at the end of the film, despite his wrongdoings, the audience would feel sorry for him. Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri in the comparatively smaller role of corrupt cops are very good in their satirical punches. All other actors, some with minor roles, performed very well. This film also proves that cinema is the director’s medium.

As per Box Office report, despite the high critical acclaim, the film was not commercially successful. Probably the use of techniques like imagery, expressions, and body language in the film was beyond the understanding of the general cine audience. There is nothing for the front benchers and the film lovers from the mofussil region of India, like titillating dances they would expect in a mafia den. Even six murders are shown in the film in a subtle way without much of fight scenes. I think, Vishal Bhardwaj knew beforehand that the film was meant for the niche audience. He did not charge any fee as a screenplay writer, director and the music director for the film (as per the preface of the book referred to above).

There are 5 songs in the film, all written by Gulzar and set to music by Vishal Bhardwaj. I have found only 3 songs which appeared in the film. However, ‘excluded’ songs are available on audio albums. I am presenting the first song from the film ‘jhin min jhin min jhini’ to appear on the Blog. The song is sung by Sadhana Sargam, Anuradha Sriram, Ustad Sultan Khan, Rakesh Pandit and chorus.

The background of the song is that Ajay Gehi (Guddu), son of Kaka (Piyush Mishra) who is a close associate of Abbaji (Pankaj Kapur) is to get married to Sameera (Mausami Makhija), daughter of Abbaji. The song is played on the eve of the engagement ceremony. The song is prominently picturised on Tabu and Mausami Makhija as a part of sangeet ceremony for females.

In the soundtrack of the film, the prelude of the song is a couplet (doha) of Amir Khusro recited by a dancer (Shwetha Menon) which is not included in the song on the audio album. The song is interspersed by Sufi Qawwali which is again picturised on Shwetha Menon as a part of her mujra dance for the males during which Pankaj Kapur, Irrfan Khan, Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Piyush Mishra, Shammi Narang etc can also be seen.

While the song is being played, the camera captures some other details such as conversation between Irrfan Khan and Om Puri, the conversation between Tabu and Irrfan Khan and Tabu’s expression on the dance between Pankaj Kapur and Shwetha Menon whom Tabu thinks as the potential mistress of Abbaji.
