Satta (English: Power) is a 2003 Indian political drama film co-written and directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. It stars Raveena Tandon in the lead role and Atul Kulkarni, Govind Namdev and Sameer Dharmadhikari appear in the supporting roles.[1]
The film narrates the story of a persecuted wife of an greedy
politician who takes on his role after he lands up in jail because of
murder charges.[2] Released on 7 February 2003, Satta received critical acclaim upon release and is considered one of the best performances of Tandon.[3][4] The film was released on the same day as Khushi, Baaz: A Bird in Danger and Kash Aap Hamare Hote.[5]

Plot
Anuradha Sehgal (Raveena Tandon) re-locates to Mumbai, finds employment, meets and weds Delhi's aspiring Chief Minister, Vivek Chauhan (Sameer Dharmadhikari). She soon finds out that Vivek is a womanizer and an alcoholic. She then faces physical abuse. Vivek is arrested for murder and is jailed. The Chauhan family persuade her to stand for elections in her husband's place, which she does. She then witnesses the nexus between the underworld, businessmen, corrupt policemen and politicians.Cast

Satta opened to generally positive reviews. Deepa Gumaste of Rediff.com wrote: "Raveena Tandon has obviously landed the role of a lifetime and she makes the most of it. She portrays the firebrand Anuradha with the kind of passion you wouldn't have expected from the heroine who once danced to the tune of Tu cheez badi hai mast."[6] Taran Adarsh in his review wrote: "Raveena Tandon delivers a bravura performance. The actress takes giant strides as a performer, giving the right touches to her character. Here's a performance that's bound to be noticed."[7] Komal Nahta in a less favourable review wrote: "On the whole, Satta is a non-starter. Storyline
Delhi-based, liberal-thinking, politician-hating Anuradha Sehgal
re-locates to Mumbai, finds employment, meets and weds the state's
aspiring Chief Minister, Vivek Chauhan. She soon finds out that the
Chauhan family is two-faced, while Vivek himself is a womanizer and an
alcoholic; her movements will be restricted, and she will be physically
abused. Things dramatically change when Vivek is arrested for murder and
lodged in a cell. The Chauhans persuade her to stand for elections in
Vivek's place, which she does. It is here she will witness the nexus
between the underworld, businessmen, corrupt policemen and politicians,
and that her life is not only in danger outside, but she may be burnt
alive by her conservative in-laws who suspect her of having a widely
publicized affair with Yeshwant Vardhe. Written by

Dirty politics with woman empowerment at its central theme.....
"Satta" can be watched
from two different perspectives. On one side, the film advocates the
woman empowerment through the story of Raveena Tandon, a newly wedded
bride to a rich political family, where the stand of a woman is not more
than that of a house-wife. She refuses to be intimidated by anyone and
raises voice against his abusive husband and in-laws. The other and the
major part of the film deals with the dirty politics, where the
politicians are indulged in every ugly crime like smuggling, murders,
and corruption. The film portrays how politicians befit and betray
anyone for the sake of power.
Madhur Bhandarkar, known for making movies on relevant subjects, chooses the dirty politics this time. It views politics as a dirty game to secure power and position on which few politicians fulfill their personal ambitions. Well, the film starts with a common canvass and shows all the familiar glitches; but still the film remains pretty interesting to its tight screenplay. The role of Raveena Tandon is the major strength of this film for which the film remains watchable and adds a dimension to a familiar subject. Not to a surprise, this film remains the best one yet to be delivered by Raveena Tandon. Regarding the subject or script, the film is not weaker to Bhandarkar's other movies. But the presentation and other technical aspects like music, score, pictuarisation, characters are a bit weak comparing to Bhandarkar's later movies like "Corporate," "Traffic Signal" or "Fashion." Its pretty low production values and rugged look of Raveena Tandon may keep the viewers aside from this movies for a while; but overall, the film if you watch will hold you due to the subject it chooses which is still remains a common scenario. Just one last point to mention is its muddled end which goes for an incompleteness and glibness.
