who is discontented with a failing marriage and an autistic son Buddhi
played by Dhruv Panjuani. He is constantly blamed by his wife Padmini,

Ravi obtains a drug which cures mental disorders from him and injects

Apna Asmaan received mixed reviews from critics, who debated the direction and story, but praised the acting, themes and messages about the parents' over-ambitious dreams inherited to their children. Thereafter, Buddhi changes his lifestyle and turns out to be extremely popular among his classmates. Despite Buddhi's arrogant and unruly behaviour, his parents are happy to see that he is normal. But, on the other hand, Ravi learns that Sathya has connections in underworld drug cartel, and he is now wanted by police. After winning a mathematics quiz show, Buddhi is given the title of "Aryabhatta"; and becomes popular in media and receives fame as a "mathe-magician" celebrity. His parents learns that Buddhi is now suffering from dissociative identity disorder, after examining violent activities committed by Aryabhatta. In order to stop Aryabhatta, Ravi and Padmini seeks help of their family doctor Dr. Sen to find out Dr. Sathya for antidote. Dr. Sen tracks down Sathya, who was hiding in an old-age home. Ravi and Padmini retrieve the antidote from him, and Sathya apologises the couple for destroying Buddhi's life.
One night, In an attempt to inject the antidote in Aryabhatta, he starts to threat and attacks Ravi with the same injection. In order to save Ravi from Aryabhatta, Padmini attacks him and injects him with the medicine, thus calming the latter. The next day, Buddhi returns to his normal self and begins to paint again. Story
Ravi Kumar is a plastic salesman working for Opel Plastics who is enduring a failing marriage. He has a son Buddhi, who is autistic and a slow learner. Because of Buddhi, Ravi and his wife Padmini shares a resented relationship, where she blames Ravi for Buddhi's intellectual handicap. One day, Ravi watches an interview of a scientist Dr. Sathya, who invented a controversial drug called "brain booster" which can cure mental problems. He comes with a notion to meet Sathya and get the medicine from him. After meeting with Sathya; he gets the medicine and reluctantly injects in Buddhi, which grants him intellectual strength. However, the drug has a side-effect, amnesia in which he starts to forget his parents and relatives.Thereafter, Buddhi changes his lifestyle and turns out to be extremely popular among his classmates. Despite Buddhi's arrogant and unruly behaviour, his parents are happy to see that he is normal. Storyline
Ravi and Padmini share a
strained relationship due to their teenage son Buddhi's intellectual
handicap. Buddhi, a mildly autistic slow learner displays his flair for
art but his parents, with their middle-class insecurities, neither
recognize nor encourage his talent. Driven by Padmini's social
insecurities and Ravi's guilt for dropping Buddhi as a baby, the parents
chase an unreal dream of seeing their son as a normal good student who,
like others, must become an engineer or a doctor. While Dr Sen, the
neurologist, tries hard to make Padmini accept the reality, Ravi's
accidental meeting with Dr Sathya - the maverick scientist, leads him to
the experimental "Brain Booster" that can make Buddhi a genius. The
magic drug has a side effect - Amnesia, which Ravi thinks is a blessing
since Buddhi has no good memories to talk about. Initially, Ravi
hesitates to administer the drug but one night, in an inebriated state,
he is sufficiently provoked by Padmini to inject Buddhi with the Brain

Apna Big Mess
'Apna Asmaan' tries to
deal with an interesting concept but turns out to be a big mess due to
the uneven screenplay which emerges as somewhat pretentious and
uninteresting. However, I would like to give credit to director Kaushik
for choosing an interesting subject and making the film somewhat
watchable. It does have some good moments and two very talented actors:
Irfan Khan and Shobana.
However, this is far from Irfan's best work and yet he does well with his role but it's not as good as what he did in 'Deadline Sirf 24 Ghante'. Shobana is impressive and an actress like her deserves more. Dhruv really has a problem with delivering his lines and his loud at times. Rajat Kapoor is wasted.
The film starts off interestingly as it deals with the parents' struggle with their autistic son. Then at the interval portion, it takes a turn when the father injects the 'Brain Booster' into the son and things change. There's hardly any explanation for the drastic change in his behaviour. The doctor (Rajat Kapoor) later suspects that his limbic brain must be damaged but there's hardly a brain scan done on Buddhi to confirm anything. Also, quite conveniently the 'evil' doctor is easily found. Why is it a wrong thing to have your child go to a 'special' school where these children are taught skills and guidance to live? One can understand why parents are embarrassed but there is no need to be. All this issues are brought up but either dealt with in a half-baked manner or not at all. Oh there are just too many flaws in the story....
The film would have worked if it stayed with the initial focus which was the family's struggle with autism. It could have been carried out as a means to somewhat educate and to deal with the disorder and tell a compelling story. But now it is dealt with only in a superficial way. 'Apna Asmaan' tries to convey that it is more important to be a good human being than among the most intelligent of mankind but the storytelling is just poor and it somewhat gives a misguided message regarding autism (a misunderstood disorder in India).
