Heroes is a 2008 Indian Hindi film directed by Samir Karnik and starring Salman Khan, Mithun Chakraborty, Bobby Deol, Preity Zinta, Sohail Khan, Vatsal Sheth and Dino Morea. The film is written by Aseem Arora. Although initially set to be released on 6 June 2008,[2] it was pushed to 24 October 2008, the opening weekend of the holiday Diwali. On 22 November 2008 the script of Heroes was asked to be part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
On their first stop, in Atari, Amritsar, they meet the widow, Kuljeet Kaur (Preity Zinta), and the son, Jassi, of a Sikh soldier, Balkar Singh (Salman Khan), who was Killed in action (KIA) three years earlier. The students find that the entire village is very proud of the heroic officer and his sacrifice for the country. When they are flying kites, their kite is cut and it falls beyond a certain fence, in another field. Jassi tells them that the area beyond the fence is Pakistan, and the fence is the Border.
The students' second stop, Himachal, finds them meeting the Air Force pilot Vikram Shergill (Sunny Deol), who uses a wheelchair and whose Army officer brother, Dhananjay Shergill (Bobby Deol), had also been Killed in Action (KIA). There they see that Vikram is very proud of his brother's sacrifice for his country. He shows them how he has come to terms with his own grief.
The third letter is to be delivered to a certain Mr. and Mrs. Naqvi (played by Mithun Chakraborty and Prateeksha Lonkar). In between, their bike runs out of petrol, and they hitch a ride on a military convoy heading to a nearby base. They witness coffins of martyrs in their truck, and the driver quotes an inspiring poem. At the base, they talk to the Regiment commander and find another letter by Lt. Sahil Naqvi (Dino Morea) which they request to deliver it themselves. They see that Mrs. Naqvi is busy in a tea party, hardly paying any attention. Sameer accuses her of not loving her son, and says that Sahil was a coward. Mrs. Naqvi plays them a tape which Sahil had recorded in war, after he had saved a junior's life. She tells him that she and her husband have been affected, and the Tea Parties serve as a distraction for them. They leave, but return the next day, and slowly bring the couple's life back to normal.
After completing their film, they reveal in a voice over that they graduated but did not go to America (as they had initially planned) because the trip has changed their outlook. They try to join the Army but fail. Hence, they start a school to share their experience. Some years later, Sameer and Ali are waking around their School campus. A man in olive green uniform (Salman Khan) approaches them. This is revealed to be Jassi, the son of the first martyred army officer. Now a strapping young man, he has joined the army like his father, and will soon graduate from the IMA. The movie ends with the statement, "You don't have to be a soldier to love your country".
Filming began on 15 June 2007. Salman and Preity are paired opposite each other, in their fifth film together.[4] Shooting took place in Ladakh,[5] Chandigarh, Punjab and Delhi.[6] Some scenes were shot in Pangong Tso featuring Salman Khan, Sohail Khan and Vatsal Sheth.[7]
The Indian Express argues that the film does manage to say what it set out to: that pride keeps the families of the deceased soldiers going, that civilians sleep peacefully only because someone has given up his life for them, and that they have a country only because they have brave ‘soldiers’ guarding its borders. But the director falls for the easiest trick in the book i.e. wrings tears out of so many situations that everything, even the supreme sacrifice that the soldiers make, turns trite.[8] Indiatimes movies gave the movie 4 out 5.
The film's writer Aseem Arora was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Story.

Storyline
Havaldar Balkar Singh,
Captain Dhananjay Shergill and Lieutenant Sahil Naqvi are amongst
numerous fatalities on India's side in the 1999 Kargil war against
Pakistan. All 3 men had written their last letters to Kuljeet Kaur,
Squadron Leader Vikram Singh, and Dr. Naqvi respectively. These letters
were located 3 years later by IBN Reporter, Avinash Sarin, who entrusts
them to two Indore-based slackers, Ali Shah and Sameer Suri, and asks
them to deliver them to Chandigarh, Manali, and Leh respectively. Ali
and Sameer set out to film this journey in order to get a graduation
degree so that they can re-locate to America as well as televise it
widely in order to convince the youth not to join any of India's armed
forces.

Trivia
The scene when Sohail Khan goes to buy a condom for his girlfriend on her dad's bike wearing her dad's underwear is very similar to a scene from Chetan Bhagat's novel 'Five point Someone', where the protagonist first makes love with his girlfriend, has to go out urgently, so he wears her girlfriend's dad's shirt, takes his car, and when is returning back meets her dad on the way. Could have been Rang De Basanti ver. 2008
Comparisions to Motorcycle Diarries lets not go there.
Sohail Khan:: His performance is good in parts. His attempt to be "cool" is annoying while the serious/ emotional side suits him. Should stop showing off his muscular side every time.
Vatsal Seth:: Good looks, but needs more time to mark a stamp about his performance.
Amrita Arora & Riya Sen:: Force fit for the intro song and the inane comedy. The role should have been simply purged.
Mohnish Behl:: Small role but does it well (and age is catching up!)
Chapter #1: The best, IMO. Salman is OK and his patriotic lines seems to be inspired from Sunny's movies. Preity excels (thanks to her stint with the parallel cinema and it shows!). The confession to the uniform is not warranted. The young Jassi leaves a mark.
Chapter #2: Bobby is OK but it is Sunny who messes up big time. He attempts to do a Hum Dono Dev Anand and ends up creating a caricature. And what was Hrishitaa Bhatt was doing there?
Chapter #3:: Dino Morea doesn't have a role at all. Prateeksha Lonkar delivers a good performance. And its is Mithun who gives a performance which belongs to "Bollywood 1980". Now we know why he was lost in oblivion.
The transformation a.k.a enlightenment should have been a natural progression rather than in spikes. And the end was definitely OTT (the grey hair, school, Jassi et all). Why can't it be a silent realisation?
Had more time/ effort spent on screenplay/ script we could have seen another Rang De! And yes the original title "Mera Bharat Mahaan" would have been apt.
