Tribute
to Hindi film music composer Ramlal, the creator of such beautiful
songs like "“pankh hote to ud aatee re”, "tum to pyaar ho sajna",
"taqdeer ka fazaana", "tere khayaalon mein hum" and "geet gaaya patharon
ne", on his death anniversary today.
Ramlal Chaudhary was one of the most neglected music directors of Hindi film industry, yet he composed some everlasting melodies. Ramlal composed immortal songs for films like 'Sehra', 'Husnbaano','Geet Gaaya Patharon Ne', 'Nakaab posh' and 'Naaglok'.
Ramlal, an accomplished shehnai and flute player himself, started working as assistant with composer Ram Ganguly for Prithvi theatre. In 1948 he played Flute and Shahnai in many songs for composer Ram Ganguli in 'Aag', Raj Kapoor’s debut film as Director.
As an independent music director, he first landed with producer P.L. Santoshi's Raj Kapoor-Vaijayantimala starrer 'Tangaawala' in 1950. He recorded six songs for this film. Unfortunately, the movie was never released. In between, he continued to play the flute and shehani in various films.
In 1952, he got a second chance as music director for the baal hardeep produced film, 'Husnbaano'. It was a hit film and established Ramlal as a music director.
Then came producer-director V Shantaram's 'Sehra' (1963). It was a superhit film. 'Pankh Hoti to Ud Jaati Re O Rasiya Jaalimaa' sung by none other than Lata Mangeshkar, 'Taqdeer Ka Fasaana Jaakar Kise Sunaaen' sung by Mohammed Rafi, 'Tum To Pyaar Ho Sajna' rendered by Mohammed Rafi and Lata and other songs brought Ramlal much fame.
One more feather was added to his cap with V Shantaram's 'Geet Gaaya Pattharon Ne' released in 1965. Ramlal recorded 'Tere Khayalon Mein Hum' sung by Asha Bhosle, 'Saanson Ke Taar Par' sung by Kishori Amonkar (solo), Asha Bhosle and Mahendra Kapoor (duet) and 'mandve tale gareeb ke do phool khil rahe hain' sung by C.H.Atma were all popular numbers of those days.
Thereafter, he found himself out of the industry due to the machinations of some powerful music directors and renowned producers.
He, then, decided to produce his own film. With a partner, Charles, he started the film, 'Tyagi' under the banner, 'Panna pictures.' but after some time, the partner left him stranded. Choudhary lost about Rs 60,000 in the project and a whisper campaign started in the industry that as producer, Ramlal could not do justice to his films. He got no more films.
Ramlal played flute and shehnai in films 'Aag', 'Mughal- e-Azam' and 'Navrang'. In 'Sehra', Santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and in 'Geet Gaaya Patharon Ne' flute maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia worked under him. Laxmikant Pyarelal have worked with him as assistants in 'Maaya Macchinder'. Kalyanji Ananadji also worked with him in 'Naaglok' under his direction.
Call it fate or anything but the creator of such beautiful songs Ramlal did not get much chance to work in films. In spite of that whatever work he did was sufficient to prove his genius.

RAM LAL – THE UNSUNG MUSIC DIRECTOR:
My late father used to say in Hindi , Jeewan- Mrityu , Nafaa- Nuksan
, Yash – Apkash apne haath mein nahin hota – and how true he
was or many others who subscribed and
still subscribe to this view.
Name , fame and financial well being elude many despite being
endowed
with the best of talent and
capabilities.
My source informs me-
though not confirmed or mentioned anywhere else as far as my search
goes – that today is the death anniversary of Ram Lal Chaudhary or
simply Ram Lal , a talented music director
of the bygone era of Bollywood.Starting
as an assistant to music director Ram Ganguli , he played flute for the
songs
in Raj Kapoor’s directorial venture Aag
and contributed to the music of the song
– Zinda Hun Is Tarah ki Ghame Zindagi nahin – sung by Mukesh and the
song - Dekh Chaand ki Ore Musafir, Dekh Chaand Ki Ore sung by Shailesh
and Shamshad Beghum . As an independent music director , he composed
beautiful melodies for two movies namely ‘Sehra’ and ‘Geet Gaya
Patharon Ne’ which
are sung and hummed even today after decades. The semi classical
number ‘ Pankh Hotey To Ud
Aatin Re’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar,
‘ Taqdeer Ka Fasaana Jaa Kar Kise Sunayen ‘
sung by Muhammad Rafi and &
‘ Tum to Pyar ho, o sajni…. ‘ sung by Mohammad Rafi & Lata
Mangeshkar are simply unforgettable. So are
the songs from the film ‘Geet Gaya
Patharon Ne’ like ‘Tere
Khayalon Main Hum’ , ‘ Saanson ke taar Par ….Geet Gaya Patharon ne’
sung by
Asha Bhosle & Mahendra Kapoor as a duet and the solo version sung
by Kishori
Amonkar set to
wonderful tune by Ramlal. Unfortunately he did not get any work after
this
, was in acute financial straits and was forcedb to live a life of
penury .
Our humble tributes to the great
music director!
