Ranjan – South star goes Bollywood
Ranjan (rn: Ramanarayana Venkataramana Sarma) was born in Mylapore, Madras state on March 2, 1918. He earned a B.A. in physics and a post graduate degree in music at the University of Madras and while a student there he also began appearing in plays which got him noticed by Veppattur Kittue of Gemini Studios.
Using the screen name R. Ramani, he started his film career with the Tamil language picture Ashok Kumar (1941) and then appeared in other Tamil and Telegu films throughout the decade. His big break came when he was cast in Chandralekha (1948), which was filmed in both Tamil and Hindi, and it, along with other bilinguals, helped him gain a foothold in the Bombay film industry where he, now using the name Ranjan, started appearing in supporting parts in social dramas.

His popularity soared after starring in a stunt films like Sinbad the Sailor (1952), Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo (1952), Baghdad (1952), Nishan Danka (1952), Shahenshah (1953), and Kismet (1956), and in addition to acting he dabbled in writing, creating the story for Filmistan’s Munimji (1955) and he was editor for a magazine on classical music and dance called Natyam. He also organized various music festivals.

Throughout the rest of the 1950s and into the 1960s he continued to appear in action packed fare such as Paristan (1957), Hum Bhi Kuchh Kum Nahin (1958), Air Mail (1960), Khilari (1961), Flight to Assam (1961), Sakhi Robin (1962), Haqdar (1964), Accident (1965), Flying Circus (1966), etc. In the 1970s he reemerged as a character actor in films like Sabak (1973), Idd Ka Salaam (1976), and Bullet (1976).

In the 1980s Ranjan retired from the screen and moved to the U.S.
where he passed away of a heart attack in New Jersey on September 12,
1983.
