Description

Storyline
Ram (Raj Kapoor) is a destitute but bright law
student who runs his finances with the help of money orders from his
mother and pawning his possessions with the moneylender. During this
struggle Ram falls in love with Sohni (Mala Sinha), who is also from a
very poor family. To save Sohni from getting married to Harbanslal, Ram
decides to rob the safe of the moneylender. His robbery goes wrong when
the moneylender returns to his home. In the fear of getting caught, Ram
accidentally kills the moneylender. Ram struggles with his own sense of
guilt and the fear of getting caught by police.

The film is based on the Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel Crime and Punishment and even when you must be familiar with the novel and its success, the film never tries to act its adaptation and decides to stand on its own merit which as a result work for its good and the credits doesn't go to the plot holed story but to the performance of Raj Kapoor who never makes us believe he is acting for the film but the other way round.
Very rare Indian films are there which have dealt with psychological conditions and to that, some are only are there above the league, like this one, because it shows its conditions so eminently so clearly so purely that you would watch the film just on his acting.
About other things, like music and other performances, i would say it is OK, but this one is surely for the Raj Kapoor, whom i believe if he would be living now, would have been a world class actor and would definitively condemned the current pattern of film being made here.
