Menakabai was a skilled classical singer; her merit was duly
recognised by Indian Cinema as well. Minerva Movietone's
film 'Prithvi Vallabh' featured beautiful songs by 'Menaka'.
Her duet with Rafiq Ghaznavi, 'panchhi ud chal apne desh',
or 'khule swarga ke dwaar', a solo from the same film, are
perhaps better known. But the piece de resistance from
the film is the familiar bhajan : 'raam naam dhan paayaa mai.nne'.
A beautiful composition by Saraswati Devi, it has been
thrillingly rendered in a dynamic style by Menaka-bai
in a startling departure from the more sober style generally
used for such songs, a sublime amalgam of bhakti-ras
and brio.
May her soul rest in peace.

Menaka/Menakabai / Menakabai Shirodkar ( Bombay )
—————————————————-
Menaka
was born in Lahore in or around 1910. She was from a professional
singer family and got training in classical singing. The family was
originally from Belgaon and her maiden name was Menaka Belgaonkar. Later
she was married and became Menaka Shirodkar.
At the age of 23-24 she
landed in Bombay to try her luck in films. In those days such girls
from singing families used to get into films easily, due to their
singing capability. She joined Minerva and sang in their films, starting
with Pukar-39,in which she got only one song.
She was more
interested in classical singing and hence concentrated on singing more
than acting. However, she did act in 5 films, in which she also sang.
After her film Gul Bakavli-47 she devoted her full time in singing
and holding jalsas. Soon she became a known figure in singing circles.
After marriage she got two daughters. One of them Shobha became a famous
singer and was known as Shobha Gurtu.
After her singing was over Menakabai Shirodkar-as she came to be known later- retired and settled in Ponda,Goa.
She died on 23-12-2003 at the age of around 93 years.

Shobha Gurtu
Shobha continued her musical education with ustads of the eminence of Nathan Khan in classical singing and Ghamman Khan in light classical and popular music.
The grand dame of Thumri was thoroughly steeped in pure Classical Music. But she was better known for her light Classical Music. Shobha Gurtu was considered to be in a class by herself not merely because of the unique qualities of her warm and sensuous voice that blended strength with suppleness and vigour with grace. It was equally much the unique combination of talent and soul that she brought to bear on her music. She rendered with equal ease, everything from thumri, dadra, hori, kajri and chaiti to ghazal, bhajan and Marathi Natya Sangeet, with all regional and stylistic variations blended subtly.
Her father in law, Pandit Narayan Nath Gurtu, the erudite scholar and musician, also influenced her style. She was particularly influenced by singer Begum Akhtar and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.
A popular broadcaster and television artiste, she regularly featured in major musical events held all over the country. She had also created the musical scores for several Marathi and Hindi movies and had also lent her voice to the silver screen.
In 1989 she received the Sangeet Natak Academy award. She also got the Lata Mangeshkar Puraskar, Shahu Maharaj Puraskar and the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar. In 2002, she was awarded the Padma Bhushan.
Shobha Gurtu passed away on 27th Sept 2004, after reigning for five decades as the queen of Thumri.
