This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a contributor to this blog. This article is meant to be posted in atulsongaday.me. Today’s song is from film Bichhade Balam-48. It is a qawwaali-type song sung by three singers…Meena Kumari, A R Oza and Mohd. Hussain Farooqi.

I believe that all visitors to this Blog are essentially lovers of old Films and music. Now, ‘old’ is a highly subjective and relative term, as far as Music is concerned. What is considered as ‘old ‘ by a 25 year old young man, may not be considered old by a 65 year old. I feel that ‘old music ‘can be roughly defined as “Film or Music which was created 10 years (or prior to that) before one’s birth.” Thus for a 20 year old youngster, all songs created before 1980 are old, those created before 1970s are very old and those created before 1960s are Antiques. In the same way, for a 70 year old man old music means music created before 40s whereas very old music for him would be the music that was created in the 30s.

sl no. Age today Old (songs from or before) Very old (songs from or before) Antiques (songs from or befor)e
1. 20yrs 1980s 1970s 1960s
2. 30yrs 1970s 1960s 1950s
3. 40yrs 1960s 1950s 1940s
4. 50-60yrs 1950s 1940s 1930s
5. 70yrs 1940s 1930s Nil

Please note that it is only a casual observation, not based on any technical or research data base. I have found that generally the above is more or less correct while understanding the tastes of different age groups. For people who are in their 40s ( most of our regulars) today, they must have grown listening to songs from movies of 70s and 80s, so what was before their birth naturally will become old music. However personal choices and variations will remain. For example, Vidur Suri ji, who is in his late teens likes songs of the 40s and 30s. These are exceptions, but then exceptions prove the rule !

Belonging to the last group mentioned above, for me film ‘Bichhade Balam’-48 is an old film. This was a Ranjit film and it was directed by Manibhai Vyas and the music was from Bulo C Rani. The cast was Meena Kumari, junior Khursheed,, Anjum, Nihal, Qamar, Shaikh Hasan etc etc. Khursheed jr. was Meena kumari’s elder sister, but the film’s Heroine was Meena Kumari.

Meena Kumari, one of the finest actresses of Hindi cinema, was born on 1-8-1932, at Bombay. She started doing child roles in films like Leather face-39, Ek hi bhool-40, Behan-41, Pratigya-43, Lal Haveli-44 etc . In all, she acted as a child in 15 movies. Her first break as an adult heroine came when se was just 14 year old. The film was “Bachhon ka khel”-46. She joined Ranjit where she did films like, Piya ghar aaja-47, Duniya ek sarai-47, and Bichhade Balam-48.

After this film, her Luck took a pause. She lost her mother whereas her elder sister got married and went away. She had to look after the family. However, in 1949, she got a role in Mythological film,” Veer Ghatotkach”-49. After this, she also worked in a few more Mythologicals, like Shri Ganesh Mahima-50, Hanuman Patal Vijay-51, Laxmi Narayana-51 etc. This made her a small Goddess in religious films and there was a danger of her getting typedcast in such roles. Luckily, Bhatt Brothers selected her for the lead role in Prakash Films”Baiju Bawra”-52 and then, as they say- there was no looking back for her.

While doing Baiju Bawra, she suffered from an attack of Typhoid fever. She was sent to Mahabaleshwar to recover. On return journey to Bombay, she met with a serious car accident and her hand was badly fractured. At one point of time, amputating her hand was considered as a medical option, but luckily Plastic Surgery helped her and her hand and her career was saved. She lost a finger in this accident though and clever photography ensured that her missing finger was never captured on screen.

After this incident, according to her, in every film that she did, she had a minor accident till the last. Ultimately, she accepted it as her fate.

Meena Kumari’s life is an open book that shows how destiny plays hide and hide, instead of hide and seek in case of some people. She never got happiness in her life. Neither from a Husband, nor from any of the lovers. She never got peace of mind in spite of drinking so much and…..one day the Queen of Tragedy in Reel and Real life went to God to ask him why she suffered so much !

Today’s song is sung by three people, Meena Kumari, A R Oza and Mohd. Hussain Farooqi. I know most readers may not have even heard the name of this last mentioned singer. One reason is that Mohd. Hussain Farooqi was a singer in the late 1940s and secondly he sang only 15 songs in 12 films made between 1947 to 1950. This was also the transition period for our film industry. After Partition, many artistes migrated to Pakistan,in search of greener pastures and with an urge to build a new Nation.

There was a flood of popular melodious songs during 1947 to 1950 and in this flood, Farooqi’s songs were not able to catch much attention. He was a natural singer, without any formal training in music, but his personality and style of singing was suitable for an actor. He acted in 12 films, singing 15 songs in them. his first film song was “Kamjoron ki nahin hai duniya” from film CHHEEN LE AZAADI-47, which had become very popular with all revolutionaries.

Mr. Mohammed Farooqui was born on 17th August 1915 in the city of Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan in a religious family of mohalla peerzadgan. He got his basic education in the city under the guidance of his fatherHaji Muniruddin. During his childhood he displayed talent in singing. In his youth Farooqui Sahib actively participated the music; he had been always attracted to the world of music. During his schooling he performed as a singer in varied stage programmes in Rajasthan. However, his religious Haji father was against such activities. When Mohammed Farooqui completed his education, his father had visions of his son becoming a teacher, but his destination was a film studio.

At last in 1945 Farooqui Sahib came to Bombay to try his luck in the Hindi Film industry as a singer with a reference letter for the famous music director Khemchand Prakash. The only person who knew him in Bombay was Mr. Azad Farooqui, with whom Farooqui Sahib stayed for some time in old Khar. After he had struggled for a year, Khemchand Prakash asked Mr. Farooqui to see him at his house. When Farooqui Sahib went there, the legendary singer K L Saigal was also present. Khemchand Prakash introduced him to Saigal who asked Mr.Farooqui to sing a song. He sang the famous lori by Saigal, ‘soja raj kumari soja’. After hearing this SaigalSahib was very impressed and remarked, ”There is something new in his voice”. This was enough for Mr.Farooqui to get a contract with Ranjeet Movietone on a monthly salary.

After some time he got his first film as a co-singer, but Farooqui Sahib met with real success in 1947. It was a golden year for his music career. In this year his films ‘Chheen le azadi’, ‘Duniyan ek sarai’, ‘Lakhon mein ek’ and ‘Pehli pehchan’ were released. All of his songs were well-received. In particular, the song ‘kamzoron kinaheen hai duniyan’ from the film ‘Chheen le azadi’ was popular with the freedom fighters who soon achieved the goal of an independent nation.

Another song which endeared Farooqui Sahib to both the intellectuals and working class was ‘ek musafir ayebaba ek musafir jaye’ from the film ‘duniya ek sarai’. In 1948 bhajans of the film ‘Jai hanuman’ and ‘is khak ke putle ko’ from the film ‘Mitti ke khilone’, were appreciated by the public. His last two films ‘Bhool bhulaiyan1949’ and ‘Alakh niranjan 1950’ were also popular. Mr. Farooqui was among one of the singers who became successful without any formal musical training from a guru.

It was the end of the 1950. Farooqui’s father became seriously ill and sent a message to him to come home immediately. After all his successful films, Farooqui Sahib had to leave Bombay and thereafter never came back to sing another song.

Rest of his life was spent as a mission to help the poor section of the society with the light of education.

On 8th February 1990 Mohammed Farooqui left for heavenly abode at the age of 75 years, leaving behind family and friends to grieve for the loss of a talented personalty.

After his passing away one of his friends paid tributes like this,

Khabar kya thee mohammed aap hamein tanha chhorh jayenge,
Dil-e-rahber ko ghamgeen aur purnam banayenge,
Ab na subaha ayegee is shaam ke baad,
Bas hum to sirf aapke geet gungunayenge

The name of Mohammed Farooqui will figure on the list of many under appreciated talents for their contribution to Hindi cinema.

The filmography of Farooqi is- Chheen le azaadi,Duniya ek sarai,Lakhon mein Ek,pehli pehchan, Piya ghar aajaa,Neel kamal(all 1947),Bichhade balam, jai Hanuman,Mitti ke Khiloune,Pardesi Mehmaan (all 1948),BhoolBhulaiya-49 and Alakh Niranjan-50.

The story of the film ‘ Bichhade Balam’-48 is..

Radha was an aristan. She was an expert at embroidery. That was her source of livelihood. . She was showing specimen of her work to a shopkeeper. Ramesh was studying at the college. He was great lover of Art. He happened to pass by the shop and just peeped in. He liked the hand-craft of Radha so much that he purchased all the embroidered things that she had brought to the shop. .

This chance meeting developed into acquaintrance to be later on mature into love. Both went to Rameshs father Dinanath to obtain his blessings on their marriage. . But things took an adverse turn. Dinanath suffered a heavy loss in business. In that dire calamity his son was his only solace. He called him telegraphically and explained the whole situation to him. It became evident that Ramesh had to give up his college studies and seek a job. But Radha intervened saying that Ramesh should continue his studies further and that her skill at embroidery would enable them to pull on together.

Her skill attracted the attention on another Artist, Sudhakar. It was decided that Radha should draw painting at Sudhakar’s studio. Radha went to the studio daily and Dinanath used to accompany her to and from the studio.

But whispering tongue began to sway. They imputed that Dinanath was encouraging Radha’s visit to Sudhakar and all sorts things began to be aired. The whisper reached Ramesh’s ears. He was terribly upset. He got wild-came home in a rage and began to call her all sorts of names. Dinanath just came there and explained how innocent Radha was. But it was no avail. At last the father had to drive the son out.

Days passed. Sudhakar left the place. Radha and Dinanath began to suffer from evil days. They left the place…Dinanath died on the way .

Fifteen years passed by. Radha and her son Anil were living in the city. History repeated itself. Radha was working at embroidery to educate her son just as she was doing when Ramesh was studying in the college. . Anil was studying in the college and as luck would have it Sudhkars daughter Pushpa was also studying in the same college. Both were in love with each other. Anil was working as a typist at Seth Rameshchandra’s place, but he posed before Sudhakar and Pushpa that he was Rameshchandras son. This deceit was later on exposed. Sudhakar forbade Anil to meet his daughter when he learnt that he was the son of a woman who refused to give the name of her husband.

Radha fell on hard days. She got a job at Ramesh’s place. Little did they know that they were husband and wife! One day she came across Ramesh’s photo, studied it, and then recognition came to her. She wanted to take away the photo, but the servant spotted her-she became the thief ! Ramesh scolded and insulted her…Anil came there. Anil could brook no insult to his mother. He insulted Ramesh. . But the tangle was cleared. Ramesh recognised Radha. He was convinced of Sudhkar’s innocence. He repented. All met… And Anil and Pushpa were married.

Let us now listen to this rare song, taken from the collection of Dr. Surjit Singh ji ( with Thanks) and kindly uploaded on You Tube by our own Atul ji……
