Patience Cooper was an Indian and later Pakistani film actress. Cooper began as a dancer in Bandmann's Musical Comedy, a Eurasian troupe.

Today’s song is from the film Aangan (1959).

The 50’s decade was the period in India, when after Independence, the entire Nation was trying hard to re-establish old traditions, joint families and building values among the next generation. However, the world was changing, becoming modern and there was a clash of the old and the New. All this, no wonder, was reflected in the films made during that period, because films always reflected the happenings in Society.

Unfortunately, this was perhaps the last attempt to rebuild what was shattered by the rule of the British and slowly all this disappeared. One could see that family based social films were made from the 50’s decade to almost the first half of the 60’s decade, when the appearance of the Hindi films started changing. Foreign music like Cha Cha and Rock N Roll was replacing Indian classical based songs, the film stories had newer, different and modern content replacing the family dramas. The whole society underwent a massive change and no wonder the film types also changed because films will always reflect the society. In a way, films are a mirror of society !

This film was made by Filmistan. Directed by O.P.Datta, it had music by Roshan and Lyrics were by Rajendra Krishna, Avinash Vyas and Pt. Indra. The cast of the film was Ameeta, Chand Usmani, Rahman, Agha, Leela Mishra, Gulab, Badri prashad, Indira Bansal, Ram Avtar, Sabita Chatterjee, Vijay Bala and many others. Actress Vijaybala was the younger sister of singer Mubarak Begum.

There are two names in the cast who are involved in ‘Same Name Confusion’. One is Sabita Chatterjee. There were 2 of them. One Sabita Chatterjee was a big name in Bangla films. She acted in just one Hindi film- Pariwar-(1954) and went back to Bengal. There was another regular actress Sabita Chatterji who acted in 43 Hindi films and also sang 2 songs in 2 Hindi films.

The other name for ‘Same name Confusion’ is Indira. During the silent Era and early Talkie period, there was one Indira Devi. Her real name was Effie Hippolet- an Anglo-Indian She acted in 24 silent films since 1927, but did only two Talike films-Al-Hilal-35 and Wamaq Azra-1935. Then there is the comedian fatty Indira Bansal who was operative from 1951 to 1981, and worked in 116 films. There was one Indira Wadkar, who essentially worked in bilingual films of Prabhat etc in Marathi and Hindi. She worked in 11 films and also sang 22 Hindi songs in 6 films. The last one was the Punjabi Film Heroine who worked in 58 Hindi films. She was known as Indira Billi.

The fat comedian in this film was Ram Avtar. Ram Avtar Pandey was born on 11-11-1911, at Rampur-UP,. He started his film career in 1938 with character roles. In the early 50s, he switched to comedy, when he gained weight and a pot belly. Ram Avtar was a fixture in many Nasir Hussain films. His roles in Badi Behan-49,Nagin-54,Hum sab chor hain-56,Tumsa nahin dekha-57,jab pyar kisi se hota hai-61, Phir wohi dil laya hoon-63, Teesri Manzil-67, Yaadon ki Baraat etc are memorable. I like his role in the film Teesri Manzil-1967.

His last film was Prem Geet-1981. His last released film, however, was Love and God-1986. He acted in 133 Hindi films.

The Heroine Ameeta was one actress who experienced a sudden rise in her fortune and a slow weaning away from it in next few years. Her story is interesting. How many names can a person have ? 2 – 3 – 4 ? Film actress Ameeta had 5 names. She was born Qamar Sultana. Her mother called her Indira, friends called her Indu, In film Thokar-53, she appeared as Jai jaiwanti and finally she was named Ameeta by Vijay Bhatt. Total 5 names. Ameeta was born on 11-4-1940 to Riaz Ahmed and Shakuntala Devi , in Calcutta. After her father’s death, they shifted to Bombay.

A fan of Madhubala, Ameeta was enacting her idol’s sword fight from Baadal (1951) when she caught the eye of Lekhraj Bhakhri, who signed her for his movie Thokar starring Shammi Kapoor. This was her debut film in a side role where she was credited as Jayjaywanti. Ameeta’s debut movie as heroine was a 1953 release, Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1954), directed by Vijay Bhatt. The screen name Ameeta made its appearance in this movie. The film failed, but Ameeta kept on working in films like Amar Kirtan, Badal Aur Bijli, Baaghi Sardar and Indrasabha.

Her career took a positive turn in 1956 when she starred with her idol Madhubala in the box office hit Shirin Farhad. She was then chosen for lead role in Abhimaan and Zamana and Hum Sab Chor Hai (1956) along with Shammi Kapoor and Nalini Jaywant.

The turning point in Ameeta’s career came when she became the protégé of Filmistan Studios’ owner Tolaram Jalan who produced Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957) opposite Shammi Kapoor, as a vehicle for promoting Ameeta as a new star. Great care was taken with her make-up, wardrobe and lighting, to present her in the most flattering and advantageous way possible. Furthermore, much of the film’s extensive publicity also centred on the actress. The film was a big success but Ameeta’s thunder was stolen by the then struggling Shammi Kapoor. This got her the female lead of Goonj Uthi Shehnai, a role originally intended for Asha Parekh, with whom she had acted earlier in Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1954). The film starred a then up-and-coming Rajendra Kumar and an exceptional music score went on to become one of the top-grossing films of 1959. Here despite a mature and sensitive performance, Ameeta was overlooked and Kumar was given credit for the film’s emphatic success.

Although she kickstarted the careers of Shammi Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar with these hits, Ameeta could never capitalize on them and stardom never materialized for her.

Further roles in multi-star films like Raakhi (1962) and the blockbuster Mere Mehboob (1963) did not help her career graph, even though she was nominated for a Filmfare award for the latter as Best Supporting Actress, and she now dropped to playing lead grade-B movies which though successful at the box office did not do much for her star status. Her romance opposite Kishore Kumar in Hum Sab Ustad Hai in 1965 was her next role. By 1965 she was playing negative and villainous characters in films like Rishte Naate (1965), and Aasra (1966). She was seen in supporting roles to fledgling starlets Rajshree and Babita, in films like Around the World (1967) and Haseena Maan Jayegi (1968). After filming Haseena Maan Jayegi (1968), a disillusioned Ameeta left the film industry as she was not getting leading roles and settled into matrimony. She acted in 47 films.

Though she acted in some good films like Dekh kabeera Roya-57 and Goonj uthi Shehnai-59 etc, she remained, all the time, a B grade Heroine. Till her last film Kisan aur Bhagwan-74, she acted in 47 films and then she left films. Her mother died soon after. Her daughter Sabeeha acted in a few films. Sabeeha tried her hand in Bollywood as a lead actress in Anokha Rishta (1986) and Khiladi (1992) and 100 Days (1991) which were big hits of respective years, but her career never took off. She appeared in Qayamat Ki Raat (1992), before she too disappeared from the Hindi movie scene. She shifted to a more successful business of Jewellery designing. 'Women in Indian Cinema' : Heroines of the Silent Era

As part of 'Women in Indian Cinema', this month we will be highlighting those who shaped women's narratives both onscreen and offscreen...

📽 When Indian Cinema was in its nascent stage, women faced several societal restrictions due to which they couldn't venture into films. After making several efforts to cast women, Dadasaheb Phalke finally had to cast male theatre artists to portray women characters in India's first feature film- Raja Harishchandra.

A gradual shift took place with the arrival of actresses from the Anglo-Indian, Eurasian and Jewish communities who dominated early Indian Cinema from 1920-1940. This panel dedicated to the 'Heroines of Silent Era' in the museum highlights these early actresses.

1. Ruby Myers, known by her stage name 'Sulochana', belonged from the community of Baghdadi Jews. She started with Kohinoor Film Company and later moved to the Imperial Film Company, where she became the highest paid actress of that time. Some of her popular films were- 'Typist Girl', 'Balidaan' and 'Wildcat of Bombay'.

2. Renee Smith, known as Sita Devi became popular for her role in Himanshu Rai's 'The Light of Asia'. Later, she acted under the banner of Madan Theatres as well. Some of her famous works include- 'The Light of Asia', 'Shiraz', 'A Throw of Dice'.

3. Patience Cooper was an Anglo-Indian actress who started her career in silent films and made the transition to talkies. She rose to fame with 'Nala Damayanti' and worked in several movies like 'Dhruvatara', 'Pati Bhakti', etc. She played the first double roles in Indian cinema- that of sisters in 'Patni Pratap' and mother-daughter in 'Kashmiri Sundari'.
