Rail Ka Dibba 1953
Rail Ka Dibba is a 1953 Indian film directed by Prem Narayan Arora and starring Shammi Kapoor and Madhubala in lead roles. The film was Shammi Kapoor's second release after Jeewan Jyoti (1953). The story revolves around Sundar (Shammi Kapoor), a poor young man who makes a living by being a human billboard. One day, he saves a girl named Chanda (Madhubala) from committing suicide by jumping into the sea. Chanda, an orphan with no one in the world, is taken in by Sundar, who lives in an abandoned railway carriage near railway tracks. There, she meets Dr. Nirogi (Om Prakash), a former magician and showman, and Mohan (Sajjan), an unemployed man. The four become friends, and the railway carriage becomes a place of happiness for them.
While Sundar, Nirogi, and Chanda are trying to find ways to make ends meet, Mohan gets a job at a newspaper and brings gifts for his friends. Chanda and Sundar fall in love and get married, but they keep it a secret from their friends. However, when Mohan confesses his love for Chanda, tensions arise, leading to a physical fight between Sundar and Mohan. The film explores themes of love, survival, and the unexpected twists of destiny.
The film was the nineteenth highest-grossing Indian film of 1953 and remained Shammi Kapoor's highest-grossing release until Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957). The music was composed by Ghulam Mohammed, with lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni. The soundtrack includes songs like "Paisa Ho Paas To," "La De Mohe Balma Aasmani Chudiyan Ji," "Chham Chhama Chham," "Paapi Duniya Se Door," "Aangan More Aao Ji," and "Bhagwan Teri Duniya".
Rail Ka Dibba received mixed reviews from critics. A review by the Thought journal was not impressed with the way Madhubala was presented onscreen, but found Shammi Kapoor to be a "promising actor". The film is also available for streaming online.
